i got rid of mine... way too much of a pia (depending on the circumstances). of course, my replacement lens was more expensive - so as usual it's a tradeoff. hence the reason why we're considering these lenses in the first place.

You guys are funny. I wasn't saying using autofocus is bad, I just honestly had no idea people used it outside of point and shoot cameras. I'm actually kinda curious how it works, does anyone have a link to a tutorial on it?

If you are having difficulty with getting sharp focus consistently, you may want to see if your camera can use an aftermarket split-prism/microprism focusing screen [focusingscreen.com]. Cheap ones can be found on sites like ebay, but not all DSLR were designed to have an easily changeable focusing screen, but for the ones that are, changing the screen takes about a minute. (Just remember to handle it carefully. Have a can of air/puffer handy to remove dust.)

The focusing screen should not affect your camera's autofocus functionality with your other lenses or if you use it as an indicator for focusing your manual lens. But keep in mind that with lenses with minimum f/stops narrower than f/4, your eye position becomes critical as being slightly off-center with the center of the viewfinder will result in the prism to appear black [katzeyeoptics.com].

And keep in mind that these are focusing aids and still rely on your eyes to acquire sharp focus, and that at F/1.4, your DOF can be as shallow as a couple mm. And as always, do some homework about how these things work, their benefits and limitations.

Yeah I don't think it's "right" or "wrong" either way; it's a personal preference and anyone who tries to convince you otherwise has some serious issues.

Kind of like the Auto, Av, Tv, or M modes - they all have their specific purposes, and I use them (OK, only Av most frequently and M when it's dark) depending on the occasion.

The model I wanted has the chip for auto exposure... Sells for more than $300 usually and isn't available at buydig.com. Amazon had it for $229 on Black Friday but I couldn't buy it back then due too spending too much on other things.

??? push the button. really, that's about it. seriously, there are some circumstances i manually focus - but the majority of the time i use autofocus. this is like talking to my dad about technology. what do you mean you can pay bills online???? i thought everyone wrote checks!

they're VERY different? how could anyone answer that for you without knowing what you're intentions are? i purchased the 8mm because for what i'd be using it for, and the focus depth issues make it a good deal for me. i'd never purchase the 35mm because i'd never want a mf only lens in that length.
