Are these actually brighter than the 300 lumen minicree led flashlighs that use 1 AA battery? I own about 8 of those, 6 were adopted by family and friends and I'm tempted to buy more. AA alkalines are so cheap right now and those flashlights only cost $5, but I'm tempted to upgrade and have been disappointed by other "higher lumen" Cree led's from this price range in the past.

People seem surprised in every LED thread.
The Chinese companies have no integrity with advertising, so they look up the emitter spec sheet and find the highest lumen rating that the emitter bin is rated for under ideal conditions, and then list the flashlight as capable of putting out that many lumens. Hence, the 1000 lumen flashlight. Can an XM-L T6 put out 1000 lumens? Yes, but only under ideal conditions in a lab. But you won't get that out the front in a flashlight for circuitry, reflector, lens, and battery reasons. Most people who are around flashlights then treat the ratings this way. |

I'm also nothing close to an expert on the subject so all my thoughts should be taken with only the authority of a moderately interested amateur in lights.
On top of that most of the numbers claimed are EMITTER lumens. That means nothing. The light that actually makes it out the front of the lens to actually be able to illuminate something is what's important. Fortunately what the manufacturer says means nothing, because we can generally verify what we are ACTUALLY getting. I would ignore the manufacturers claims entirely and encourage people to make buying decisions based on the known product. I think there is some value in a cheap, reasonably high output light for next to nothing, but people should not be expecting more than that. |

I pulled the trigger. I have been wanting to try out the 18650 batteries and this seems like a good way to get one with a decent light. I bought one of those costco deals with 3 200 lumen lights in a pack. They were really good, but one never worked. I'll see how this goes. Thank OP.

Unless you are an absolute flashlight snob, you will be shocked at how bright these cheap chinese flashlights are for the money. However, I think most flashlight snobs even appreciate these cheapies for what they are..... very bright flashlights for the money. |

I am in for 1. I bought this light a while ago through Meritline, but never pulled the trigger on batteries (as I didn't realize it needed special ones). After reading all the threads on SD about the various things to look for in a battery I gave up. I didn't know if I should buy cheap batteries or expensive ones.
This gives me the cheap batteries and an extra light. If all works well, I might upgrade batteries/charger later. I will consider this a gateway flashlight to future purchases. |
