That is an oft repeated/stated statement that I tend to think of as a PS3 'myth', because as far as I have never seen any proof linked to the statement. In my opinion it was simply a conjecture made in the various first PS3 HD swap tutorials that ended up as hearsay. Conjecture based on the fact that the OEM PS3 driuves were 5400RPM, and fear that a 7200RPM drive would needlessly increase the heat within the system for no actual speed gain. A 7200RPM drive will always produce a bit more heat than a 5400RPM, yes. But I think the difference in this use is probably negligible. On the other hand there are plenty of folks who have actually TRIED installing a 7200 RPM drive in their PS3s who have reported no issues and improved load times (over a 5400 drive)--which includes me. I installed a 7200 RPM drive in my old 60GB stock PS3 phat more than 3 years ago and have seen no ill effects, just gain. I have no experience with this Hitachi in a PS3, but the main thing you need to keep in mind when looking for a suitable PS3 drive is that they be a 2.5" SATA and not too tall (manufacturers were putting out slightly taller drives in this capacity for a while) so that it fits the PS3s drive cage. You will note the very first user review on Newegg says they put this drive successfully in their PS3. So yep, an excellent drive at a excellent price if you've been meaning to upgrade your PS3.

Is this the 9.5MM drive or 7MM drive? It'd be really nice if it can be 7MM, which is required for my Lenovo Thinkpad X220.

It's also the same drive that's inside the Hitachi Touro Mobile USB 3 external drives. I bought a pair last week for $65 a piece and cracked them open to get the drives out. Probably the best deal I've seen in months.

how did you get the enclosure opened?
I was about to buy the touro version but i read that it is pretty hard to open so I just got this.

It's a one shot opening process. I was able to avoid cracking or damaging the case but there are 10 loop tabs internally which hold the two cases together. They're plastic tabs which break once you pry the bottom of the case open. I'll see if I can take a picture and post it somewhere. After observing the first case I pried open, there honestly is no way around avoiding breaking these tabs which is sad but no biggie since I don't need the cases.... just the drives.

You can glue the case back together or simply use a wide rubber band to hold it in place.

The way I got it opened was using an old credit card or Starbucks Gift card and sliding it in, under and between the top and bottom of the case. You'll use the card as a wedge and then use a flat head screw driver to get in there and pry it open. To avoid damaging the case, you can with a thin layer of paper-towel or an old t-shirt.

It's pretty easy from there once you break the first two tabs on the opposite side across from the USB 3 connection.
