Victor and Hi Tek will most likely be sold at feed stores, they are also very affordable, under $45 for a large bag.

Hi-Tor Neo. Unlike the prescription foods the vet tries to get you to buy, cats actually eat this kind. It's nearly as good nutritionally, with low protein and phosphorous. I mix it with a bit of fancy feast and it has been so far so good for more than a year now. I realized early on its more important to find something they will eat than wringing your hands as they sniff the Rx stuff and walk away.

feeding dry food to a cat with a renal disease is the worst you can do. Cats are obligate carnivores, since they are descended from african wild cats, in the wild, they've had very little access to water. Meaning that they get most of the moisture from their food. Water is absolutely essential for keeping the body hydrated and kidneys flushed and feeding dry food puts your cat in a constant state of dehydration.

I was recently watching a cat that was nothing but skin and bones, she refused to eat dry prescription food and had to be on sub q fluids every single day. Protein is not the problem (thats taken from outdated research), but you want to watch out for phosphorus and sodium levels. I recommended getting her off dry food and switching her to EVO grain free 95% meat diets(canned). They also consulted a holistic vet and he gave them an ok.

Since than, the cat has gained 8 lbs and only needs fluids once a week.

Most traditional vets are highly influenced by pet food companies like Hills and Purina, in most cases they know very little about nutrition. These types of foods should only be used temporarily and just slap a bandaid on a disorder rather than treating it.
