For those of you on the fence, I was hesitant at first too, but it turned out to be SO GOOD!! I picked it up on the last slickdeal. I immediately picked up First Shift and Second Shift (which are somewhat like prequels) after finishing Wool Omnibus. I keep telling my friends to read it. I am currently on Third Shift (just started 2 days ago), and pretty sure I will finish it tonight. Shift series books are available as Shift Omnibus now, which I also recommend.
I don't really read sci-fi or stories about dystopic worlds, but this is a page-turner. The writing style is great, too. |

The problem with oral history are the distortions that come over time - a perfect example are the great flood stories from the eastern part of the Mediterranean basin, such as Gilgamesh and Noah's Ark. It turns out that there very well may have been a flood of over 100 meters due to a land bridge collapse at the Bosporus (what are now the narrow waterway between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean) over 7,000 years ago. There have been various estimates, and roughly may have occured about the speed of a rapidly incoming tide, i.e. no time to save your possessions, just enough time to get out and with any delay at all you die - but I assume I don't need to recap how the story gets changed after a few thousand years. SF writers have had loads of fun with that issue and post-apocalyptic worlds, too. ![]() http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/...d=17884533 And to demonstrate the persistence of oral tradition (especially if it is written down after the distortions, or details altered to improve its quality as a teaching story), even in the face of a decade of scientific research - especially if it becomes "institutionalized." http://creation.com/black-sea-flo...completely Klaatu: I'm impatient with stupidity.
