Umm, you're right. I meant the opposite (if the bag was loaded top heavy, it would rotate easily) This won't happen if the strap was attached at the top...however....as I explain, this is at the cost of durability.

Regarding the strap attachment point: Its difficult to describe without a free body diagram. Essentially, it is the amount of weight in the bag that acts with momentum. If the shoulder straps are at the top, the the entire weight of the bag can "rotate" or "swing", which adds stress to the strap attachment point. However, if the strap is in the middle, you have half the rotational momentum.

Experiment: Hold up your laptop computer (or a big book) with only 2 fingers (thumb and index) on each hand. Hold the laptop screen parallel to your chest. Quickly move the laptop toward you, then away from you (kinda like doing push ups, but vertically. Compare this action while holding the laptop at the top edge, or in the middle. Do you feel the higher stress in your fingers when the laptop want to "swing"?

I had a chance to look at my bag this morning, and noticed 2 other big reasons why the strap was attached this way: The bottom half of the bag uses a thicker (stronger) fabric. It is also sewn on to the handle. This makes it even beefier. The other reason is that attaching it here allows for a really big zipper opening.

I just realize that I got the basecamp duffel medium for the same price at the buy.com deal last year. As others said, it may be more rugged/durable. If you don't need the size of the XL, get the basecamp one.

I looked at the photo in the bargin outfitters link and it looks exactly like mine. However, the dimensions are slightly different. (Here is the link to the one I brought last year:

Remember that different sizes (M/L/XL) will have different dimensions... also, different model year will have slightly different color and features. I did a quick search on amazon and cannot find "Kelty camp duffel", but a bunch of links to "Kelty basecamp duffel". I think they are the same stuff...
Edit: I also found a different "Kelty basecamp duffel" on Bargin Outfitters. The difference seem to be the material (420 denier vs 600/900d.) I looked at my bag and can't find any identification as to which it is... Now I wonder what I brought....(it did serve me well, so I'm not complaining!)

I am saying that nylon is a dollar store duffle material. the camp model uses better material. the basecamp model has very durable material. The three look similar but are not the same in function. I would not carry any of these on a hike, but use the latter for supplies in car. Though Kelty makes camping supplies, the durability levels will stay the same for whatever you use a duffle for...

Hope it works good for a volleyball bag.

Thanks daisy! I got the camp duffel. It seems really lightweight. I'm getting my son ready for a two-year stint as a church missionary in Spain. He has to pack everything he will need for two years (of course he can shop there, but he won't have a ton of time for that) in two bags and a carry on. I think tucking this lightweight duffel in the bottom of his suitcase could be really great for those times when he's transferred to another area and needs just a tiny bit more room than his original flight-ready bags provide.
