Oh! well in that case, you should try xbmcbuntu or openelec for a direct-to-xbmc linux based OS that would not require windows installation. you can even test the builds from a usb thumbstick (or use one to dual boot, and or not replace the HDD!)

Call Dell and ask for the restore disks. It will probably run you about $10.

I am actually quite intrigued by the Ubuntu platform. I'm secretly hoping for a laptop deal too good to pass up that doesn't have an OS installed, just to give Ubuntu a spin...

You don't pay for the software itself, you pay for the licence to use the software. Since he already has a valid key, he can legally get the sofware from anywhere, whether through a friend or through strangers via torrent. And I'm guessing he can't get the software through Microsoft because they have already stopped supporting it. But obtaining the software by other means is not illegal.
edit: I'm talking about just a windows xp iso, not a cracked xp iso, and not one that comes with serial numbers, so its all legit. Anybody is allowed to download it, making it legal to torrent.

Why would you need a spare? If you're curious about Ubuntu, download their windows installer and try it out.

It does run a little slower than an installed Ubuntu but it is excellent if you just want to see what Linux offers.

It's safe, as it is just like installing a windows program and uninstalls in the same way.

The only problem I have with this netbook is that it has no HDMI. If it did, I would have jumped on this deal in nanoseconds

Too bad they're all scratched, dented, or even "gouged."

I received a "7" today. Cosmetically it is flawless. I haven't installed an O.S. yet.

The only other items I've bought from Cowboom were a couple Kindle Keyboards, and both were a little better than the descriptions would have lead me to believe.

I can't believe I pulled the trigger...lol. All the 8's were gone, picked up a 7.
