Will this work as a Plex Server?
Planning do the same and should work (unless it requires more RAM)
Currently have a i5 3rd gen 8GB dedicated for Plex which is an overkill.

Worked for me too... Looks like a great deal on a great MicroServer.. I have the N40L and it runs great.. No issues at all....
My 40L htpc is a BEAST! 8gb ram, 512mb low pro gpu, 7.1 pci sound card, ssd +4 hdd, running win 7 64bit 24/7. Draws about 60-68 watts between idle, downloading, watching movies. I was lucky to get the 40l for $214 shipped when newegg had a business promo. Love it.

what OS do you recommend for this?
Depends on what you want to do with it...

- ESXi
- Hyper-V 2012
- unRaid
- FreeNAS
- WHS
- Windows Server 2012 Essentials
- Solaris

Love my N40L, the only change is a faster CPU.

now you can load Synology os to it! definitly a good deal compared to the "real" synology product.

I'd just get unRAID and not deal with this.

It doesn't look like this config includes an HDD, but in my opinion it's not worth extra for that. I'd recommend an SSD for the optical bay and 4 matched HDDs for the raid.

Edit: I take that back. This SKU does seem to include the 250GB drive. Still, I recommend an SSD in the optical bay for your OS, saving your 4 other bays for RAID. Also, for ESXi you can install it on a flash drive and boot from the internal USB port.

On second thought, I think I'll just watch for an Intel Mac Mini on Craigslist and plug some externals into it. They pop up once in awhile for $200-$300. Everything else I own is OS X or iOS, anyhow.

It really depends on how you intend to use it. It should run just about anything that a typical home might use. Windows Home Server is frequently chosen. You could also run Openmediavault [openmediavault.org]or Amahi [amahi.org]if you don't mind Linux.
