Shipping is $6.75 unless I'm missing something. $110 has been a regular price for them and often goes on sale for 100.

if i am not mistaken there was a slick deal on these for $88 or something - one of the web sites with weird names had a promo for $30 off or something like that and they happened to carry ATH-M50 for $118 or so. That went extremely fast though

do they do discounts on the mods regularly? I was going to pick one of these up via Amazon, but I'd really really like a detachable cable (for easier storage and so I can swap it for a mic cable). The mod seems pricey though...

You can't blame them for trying to make a buck. If you want to do this on your own there are plenty of forum posts on how to add a mini jack to your headphones to make the cable detachable on head-fi.com. Warranty of course will be void.

The removable cable mod is only $39 - this covers the cost of the connectors, installation and testing (about 45 minutes tech time total) and a 2 year warranty (since the manufacturer's warranty is voided by the mod). This is done here in the USA, and we pay our techs a living wage. Frankly, $39 just about covers our costs.

We don't expect to make a big profit on the modification, but we also can't lose money on it. We offer it mainly because we want to encourage folks to buy the headphones from us.

Sorry, I have to take issue with this posting.

We tested more than 10 different female jacks before we settled on the one we use. Some are quite cheap, and not reliable over time. The one we use has coiled springs behind the contacts to maintain good contact for years and it is rated for 10,000 insertions. It costs more than $1.50.

You also didn't mention the male plug, which is a locking, gold plated plug. Also not cheap and even more expensive than the female.

I can accept that there is only about 10 minutes of actual soldering involved. But, there are many other steps to the procedure that collectively take much more time than the soldering time. To do this right, it takes time and skill.

In the end, folks are welcome to do the mod themselves, of course. We feel that $39 is more than fair for the work and expertise that we provide, not to mention the 2 year warranty, which you would lose if you did the work yourself.

Yes - $39 is the discounted price and it is what we charge if you are buying the headphones from us and get the mod done at the same time.

The mod is $45 if you buy them elsewhere and send them in for the mod.

I stand corrected. Thanks for posting. It's refreshing to have the vendor explain exactly what they are offering.

If purchased elsewhere and sent in, do you also add the male plug in to the existing cable? Do you offer a warranty as well for outside purchased headphones?

No, the MAP (street price) as defined by the manufacturer for this item is $159 and MSRP is $199.

We commonly offer it on special for $119 or thereabouts. On rare occasions, we run them in limited quantities for $99.99 (as we are now), but this is not the standard price.

Some of the best headphones for music/movies in the $100 price range. Great bass and clarity.

Gamers might be more interested in open-back sets, though. If positional audio cues are important to you (like hearing footsteps in first-person shooters), then closed-back headphones like these don't give you the wide open soundstage of an open-back set (like the Audio Technica ATH AD700s, which are also in this price range).

But if you aren't a gamer, then these M50s are probably better for general use. They definitely have much better bass.

I've used these for gaming for years now. I've used them in Call of Duty games and they have worked very well. I can tell exactly where a person is depending on the sound that comes through the headphones. I would say the soundstage is good enough! You should see me beast with these headphones on, don't test me!
