The removable cable mod is only $39 - this covers the cost of the connectors, installation and testing (about 45 minutes tech time total) and a 2 year warranty (since the manufacturer's warranty is voided by the mod). This is done here in the USA, and we pay our techs a living wage. Frankly, $39 just about covers our costs.
We don't expect to make a big profit on the modification, but we also can't lose money on it. We offer it mainly because we want to encourage folks to buy the headphones from us.
Overall I love these headphones. They are great built quality and have excellent sound quality. One negative for me is that they start hurting the area around my ears from the headphones pushing so much pressure against my head. I have a larger than average head (not freakish large or anything) size so that may be the problem. I ran across a few people complaining about the same problem on forums and apparently there is a fix for it. I just haven't looked into it yet, I've only had the headphones for a couple months without much time to listen to them.
So if you have an above average sized head I would be slightly wary about purchasing. If the fix alters the performance or look of the headphones, I will most likely be selling my pair....which is unfortunate. :/
Average size head here as well as average ears I believe. My ears HURT after about an hour of wearing these headphones. I don't know if its because they are closed or just shaped wrong for my head. I also have some Senns which have this velour padding I could live with for days. SLEEP WITH!. Alas they are open and I get complaints.
I'm pretty happy with mine. The fake leather pads get really sweaty and break down quickly, though. I changed them to felt pads, the Beyerdynamic DT250/DT280 pads: while they are way more comfortable, the sound is 'different'. Less isolation; I bought these because I wanted closed headphones and now they are almost like open ones. It's difficult to get a good balance of closed and ventilated, though...
do they do discounts on the mods regularly? I was going to pick one of these up via Amazon, but I'd really really like a detachable cable (for easier storage and so I can swap it for a mic cable). The mod seems pricey though...
No idea if there were any discounts before. But someone posted an ebay link to a company that does mod to M50 as well for $9 cheaper...
Honest question, why do people mod it? Is the cable too long or are you scared it'll be damaged and it's easier to replace when modded?
I like having the option of changing to another cable... Maybe get a colored cable?
