This is a good hard drive replacement but don't expect SSD speeds as advertised.

Is this a good price? What do i need to know if it would fit into my laptop? Size and formfactor?
Isnt this an awesome deal? I thought ssd's were still closer to $1 per gb? NVM i didnt read it is a hybrid Last edited by elfnumber1; 03-16-2013 at 08:26 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

1. Not a deal. The street price with minimal shopping around for it is $80. For example,
MacMall [macmall.com] It is new so retailers are pricing it wildly. 2. Not an improvement over Momentus XT. Sata 3 will not any practical difference for these speeds. Have switched to cheaper and less durable MLC nand from the SLC nand in XTs and only 8 GB cache. This is a margin improvement product update for Seagate. Look for a deal on the second Gen Momentus XT 750GB drive instead which had been approaching $100. I have used all of their previous XT hybrids. Last edited by WingsOfF; 03-16-2013 at 08:59 AM.. Golden Rule of a Deal: If an item has been offered validly at a price of $X at any time, then never pay more than that in the future. It has been discontinued or will appear again at that price soon enough.

from your own link: 18% faster in HTPC workloads and 54% faster in Gaming workloads than previous generation model, not to mention lower power consumption Last edited by sr71; 03-16-2013 at 10:37 AM.. |

I like storagereview.com and find them reasonable but I would wait for another source to corroborate these "real-life" results which are just the opposite of the benchmark performance relative to the Momentus XT 2nd gen in the same review. Average over a HTPC scenario (that has more writes than reads in their scenario which is the opposite of most HTPC usage unless you are always ripping CDs and DVDs and so very odd) with a productivity usage in the same single graph makes no sense and obfuscates individual case performance and seems a bit of a set up to showcase this drive. They could be right but I am sceptical until I see other reviews come in. It has some good features. For example, lower speed with lower power consumption should help with lower heat generation. The Momentus XTs have a tendency to run hot. But I don't see this as a next generation over Momentus XT, too many compromises to keep the cost down relative to SSDs. I see it more like the Samsung 830 to 840 move that made the latest worse in some respects but had different compromises. I suspect this drive has been released to try to cater to the OEM market for low-middle end laptops that still come with a hard drive rather than a SSD. Momentus XT was too expensive for that. |

my mistake on the link, but it does address your contention about being marginal
that macMall has it isn't really an issue - if you compare it to the current XT 500GB? or for that matter the orig which everyone snapped up at $60-65 about 6 mos. ago? so it's 20% more expensive than the 1st gen and 50% faster than the 2nd gen. some folks would say that's a win it's just like when someone chimes "same price at Amazon" w/o a clue as to whether Amazon PM'ed 15 mins ago or posted days earlier. I'm not here to sell the drive, but the minformation being spread is amazing. you complain about MLC - well that's in the Samsung and Plextor drives, OMG what a nightmare! It is an alternative for folks who have a notebook and don't want to shell out almost as much as they paid for a 500GB SSD, it also is a nice alternative for folks with a drive they want to update cheaply say 250GB or old 5400RPM. It could even work for someone with a Velociraptor. just stating some facts no myth or speculation

Thanks for posting this. I'm personally holding out for the 1TB version to hit it's MSRP price of $99 before I get one. Some more reviews would be helpful too. The only other review I've been able to find so far (besides storagereview) is this one on CNET http://reviews.cnet.com/laptop-ha...28720.html
