Costco Sales Tax On full price before discount -

arcticmaniac 408 March 17, 2013 at 07:57 AM
I just got a Samsung TV from Costco with original price of 1350 with discount down to 900. But the sales tax was on the 1350 amount rather than the 900. Went to the service counter nothing they can do. That is the first time I have ever purchased something on sale and got charged tax on the original rather than the sales price. I have purchase refrig for Home Depot, etc and never got charged the full price sales tax.

Is this the norm at Costco? Or everywhere?

Yes I understand sales tax stays in the state and keeps my state humming.

Likely the norm at Costco. Bought a Samsung TV from costco.com. Black Friday sale. Was charged tax on the original price. At the time, Amazon had the same TV for the same discounted price, but tax was charged on the discounted price. We chose Costco at the end due to the better return policy, although the TV has been running without issue.

Which state you are in? It is dependent on the state as well if need to charge tax on original price vs discount price.

Done in NY as well. It's the only store I'm aware of that does it that way. All others tax after the coupon deducted price, not before like Costco.

I think the only exception is when they have a manufacturer instant discount that does not require a coupon scan. I think in these cases it was taxed after the discount from what I recollect.
