This week, Radioshack got Virgin Mobile LG Optimus Elite Smartphone [radioshack.com] on sale for $49 (regular price $99). No contract is required!
Use the $10 off $20 coupon from here or print it straight from Radioshack Facebook [facebook.com] to bring the price down to $39.

This might not be the most powerful Android device out there (duh!), but for only $39, it's still a great entry-level and/or backup smartphone. It runs on Android 2.3.7, has a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, 800MHz processor (actually runs at 1024MHz according to independent CPU tests), Wi-Fi and microSD capability, 5MP autofocus rear-facing camera and camcorder with flash.

Is it worth upgrading from the Optimus V to this?

I did and am very happy with the decision. Lost my ability to do WiFi Hotspot though. Overall it runs much smoother and we have less issues than the V.
I have the Optimus V and love the Wifi Hotspot feature (free wifi for latop while traveling) ... but I hate the constant "low system memory" warning.
Is there really no way to have the Wifi Hotspot feature if one upgrades to the Eilte?

Change your Optimus V to custom ROM to take care of that. If the Elite can be rooted like the OV, you can get the Wifi Hotspot feature again.

I am currently using QuickSettings for the Wifi Hotspot feature -- if changing the Optimus V to custom ROM, will I still be able to use the Wifi Hotspot?

Can you please recommend a custom Rom?

Harmonia v1.9 is a clean/fast/lean version of the stock ROM. Takes out all the Virgin bloat that slows the phone down and hogs the memory. It has WiFi Hotspot feature built-in, so you don't even need QuickSettings to enable it (although you can still use it if you want).

Thank you. I will read through it and will do it as long as I find a way to backup my contacts first (otherwise I will spend too much time trying to re-type them back in my phone).

Sync all of your contacts to one of your e-mail accounts (like Gmail). Confirm it's synced. Then when you clear your phone and install a new ROM, add your e-mail account with the synced contacts, choose that you want to sync contacts, and voila, all of your contacts are back on your phone without you having to do anything else.

What about switching from a triumph to this phone? I would be getting a smaller screen, but since this is my 'second' phone, I might be interested if this performs better, has a better antenna or is more reliable than my triumph...

I have a question.

My brother bought this for 85 bucks from Radio Shack in Maryland while his phone broke on a road call. Can he go into the local (NJ) store with his receipt and get the phone price adjusted?

Can this phone be used for Google Voice with a WiFi connection? It does list Google Talk as one of the feature, but not sure if that includes GV with audio or just online chat.

DEAD (at least in my local area). Just tried it at two stores in the Philadelphia area. Both informed me that the coupon had been deactivated because it had been abused.
Radio Shack needs to be deactivated because they have been abusing reason and logic for a very long time. Good deal though and better with a coupon.
