maybe so, but personally I can't see Duracell putting there name on a battery that is "terrible." I think when it comes to well respected manufacturers they require the china folk to make it to their specifications. And don't think china folk can't make good stuff, because they surely can. I've got a shotgun under my bed that proves that (NEF Pardner pump)

I agree. Manufacturer's dictate the quality. China or not, I doubt Rayovac would put their name/reputation at risk by selling low quality batteries out of China.

With that said, time will tell. Make sure you have a good charger that can condition the batteries while charging. I think that will lengthen experience and battery life.

I have a new La Crosse charger I picked up from Amazon less than a month ago. I hadn't used it yet and tried it for the first time last night. I read the manual, but I am unable to get the "mode" button to work (within first few seconds before flash sets the charge rate and mode) to change the mode. I even watched a few YouTube videos and was able to see that other's experience works to change the mode.

Any suggestions or did I just get a bad charger?

I have a La Crosse charger too, and the Current button never worked very well. When I researched it, I found that lots of people have problems with the buttons and that the buttons aren't constructed very well. I'd return it and when you get a replacement, make sure everything works perfectly before your warranty expires. Buttons seem to work less and less over time.

I had a few days left to "return/replace" via Amazon, so I did that. Very easy process. I'll get the new one before the old one must be returned, so I'll try it out first. I was hoping that maybe it was something I was doing wrong, but I read the manual, held the mode button for a while (until display blinked meaning the charge settings we "set" for that battery bay), but nothing. I watched YouTube too (found a really bad one for this charger), but what those folks could do, mine would not. I guess I just got a bad charger. The other buttons do work, so I can change the charge rate and view the various settings once it's begun its process, but just cannot change the mode so that it can Charge, Discharge/Refresh, Charge/Test, etc.

In case you are still considering these, the ones I received today (yes, shipping was pretty fast) are black tops (non-Eneloop)

I rec'd these Duracell AAA batteries and they're indeed the black top ones. I put them on Test mode in my LaCrosse charger, and out of the 12 batteries I rec'd, none tested at the rated 800mAh. They tested between 697-799 new, out of the box. Many were in the low 700s.

To compare, I tested some new AA Eneloops (didn't have any AAAs that were new) that I had and all in a pack rated above their 2000 mAh rating.

After testing the Duracell AAAs, I then ran them through the Recharge mode, and I was able to bring them all above 750, but it's discouraging that out of the box, none had the claimed capacity.

I always suggest the first two i mentioned. Also the La Cross can refresh batteries

What applications are people using AAA batteries in that would require top charge from their batteries? I'm planning on using these in wireless PC accessories and stuff like that. If these were going to be used in a camera I'd be more concerned about getting full or greater than 800mAh charge, but I don't even think there's any cameras that use AAA.
