Just the downtown/Gaslamp/convention center area is so much different than when I was there. When I first got there in 1983, I headed downtown (growing up in the NYC suburbs, that's where you went - downtown) - people thought I was crazy. There was essentially nothing there at that time except Amtrak and some office buildings; the Gaslamp Quarter was rundown. This was before Horton Plaza and everything else in the area. I did work at Seaport Village during college in the late '80s.

I just wish we had more time. Due to the convention, I'll have just parts of afternoons and the evenings free. But my wife and daughter will be walking distance from activities while I'm at the convention - my wife probably won't want to venture out on her own.

One negative of the visit is that I'll probably want to return. It's just not practical - compared to North Carolina, I just can't justify the much greater cost of living.

Wow you haven't been to San Diego in a long time have you? Corvette Diner as you know it is gone, gone, gone. They moved the place to Liberty Station, and ruined it. Absolutely ruined it. They added an arcade and made it very Chuck E Cheese style. They have changed the whole setting, and you are now in separate themed rooms. The black light room is so loud that you can't have any type of conversation. We sat in the trolley car room when we went, and it was not too loud. The old t.v. shows on the television screens at each booth is kind of nice in that room. The atmosphere is bigger and louder, but they tanked everything about the place that made it the Corvette Diner. The only good thing about the new location is free parking.

The food is now terrible, we tried it three separate times and finally gave up on going back. The fries are inedible, very hard, and have a "stale" taste from the grease that isn't changed frequently enough. The Philly Cheese Steak is now more gristle than anything else. The attitude of the employees is so much different, they aren't cheerful but are rude and condescending with everyone. On two separate days we found plastic inside of the burgers that were ordered and had to complain to the manager. The flare that existed in Hillcrest is gone. No gum wall, no throwing straws, and no throwing gum. The new "rules abound" Corvette Diner really lost flare. We used to go to the old one all the time. Haven't been back to the new one since the whole three strikes your out thing. I recommend calling ahead for a reservation, people tend to spend the whole afternoon there now that there is an arcade.

Yeah, I knew they moved, and heard it's nothing like the old Hillcrest location. I was just hoping for a Rory burger.

They still have the Rory Burger, different atmosphere all together though. If you can stand the noise, the 60s themed room is the best environment, if you want quiet, go with the trolley car. More tables, same number of employees, slower service. Call ahead whenever possible.

If you plan to go to Seaport Village, try to hit it on a weekday, rather than a weekend. The place is depressing now with the number of street performers, homeless people, and street vendors that they allow. The same has happened to the waterfront down by Anthony's fish grotto. They let so many homeless and vendors hang out that the fun is sucked right out of the place. We won't go there on the weekends because of how bad things have gotten. The homeless at Seaport Village are so used to being around people that they will come sit down at your table while you are eating with a group, and either you move, or the police have them move. Really awful what the place has turned into!

That's a shame. I enjoyed working there long ago...it had a nice mix of locals and tourists.

At least I know the USD campus is still beautiful.
