I have one of these. Never used it with an Xbox. Plugged headphones into it and then plugged the power cord of it into the PC via USB. It pretty much doubles the volume output of my sound card. That's pretty damn loud. It does introduce some noise too though, at least mine does. Could just be interference from another device in the vicinity; don't know.
I have one of these. It has two volume dials, game audio on the left and chat audio on the right. You can adjust the volume on each independently. There is also a "live mix" toggle on the back which is supposed to automatically raise and lower the game volume when people are talking. I didn't like it, so I turned it off. There is also a Mic on/off toggle switch on the front.
Works well, but the Mic toggle switch came off. I placed it back in and it works, but it falls out very easily now. SteelSeries offered to send a replacement, but I never got around to packaging it and sending it out.
So the main difference is that this allows you to control game audio as well as chat audio while the Xbox communicator just does chat audio. Of course that doesn't matter if you don't care about game audio coming through the headset.
