Glad I waited before contacting all4cellular. Besides the obvious chip in the "perfect" screen that wouldn't even pass for "above average", my unit's screen also turned off, and could only flicker on for a half-second, *if* brightness was set too high (including auto-brightness in bright light). Even the workaround of setting brightness back down was really hard to do when the screen would only turn on for a brief moment (and for some reason the touch portion would still work for a second before locking). When I did otherwise get it to work, it seemed to be otherwise okay (Z-Device Test, no dead pixels), but there's definitely something screwed up w/ the C-stock unit I got (doesn't help the water dot's pink, so it probably got wet deeper inside too).
Fired off 2 messages since eBay's 1000 character limit is probably 500 characters too short, requesting full refund or proper replacement, and any returns paid by them. Hopefully they'll get back to me tomorrow, otherwise I asked them to reply back by Monday. I told them I'd still give them neutral feedback and think about shopping again in the future if they handle this okay, positive if they do that and get me a good unit by March 28. Otherwise it's off to eBay Buyer Protection for me. BTW, the screen problem persisted even after hard factory reset and ICS update. Also, not sure if it was related but the tab also seemed to have problems powering on (or turning screen on from full power off) after the screen shut off from too-high brightness setting. Fortunately the ICS update ran even when the tab seemed turned off and got the screen kinda usable again so I could wipe it after testing. Last edited by mangodrink; 03-22-2013 at 04:59 PM.. 1) 6% now and 10% Final Value fees in April + 5% for paypal fees + shipping fees including tracking delivery to prevent scammers. 2) No ability to leave feedback for buyers leads to false negative feedback or blackmail. 3) Buyer protection should be called "Rip-off Assistant" and Seller Protection "Seller's Remorse" because that's about what it is. Sellers get the short end of the stick and they are the ones paying the fees. If you want to con someone, eBay is a treasure chest. |

After doing heavy reading online - I came to realize that the law is that if you purchase an iPhone for example that has a manufacturing date of after January 26 - 2013 - that iPhone is illegal to unlock. What I mean by this is that you and any one else can still get an iPhone 5 on craigslist or any other place and buy an unlock code on ebay and have it permanently unlocked - however it wouldnt be legal. My question is - does this law applies only to iPhones? Or all other Phones{Samsung/HTC/LG} and even tablets such as this Pantech in here which Im interested in buying. Obviously this Pantech tablet was made in 2012 so I would assume it is perfectly legal to buy an unlock code on ebay and have this Pantech tablet unlock - but I just want to be sure. It would be much appreciated if this question can be answered by you or any one else that has an idea of these things. |

I'm no lawyer, but your best bet is to only unlock your device from a seller selling through a legit/reputable venue. If you can't, forget about third-party and try the "going overseas to some country your company doesn't have service in" line on the first-party company. That doesn't help too much if you're considering the cost of unlocking as part of a potential purchase, but as long as you can find someone reputable to unlock it and make your purchase asap, that's probably good enough. That said, chatter suggests the ruling applies to all phones and probably tablets, but with a date cutoff. I can't remember if it's a manufacturing date cutoff or a cutoff based on any New units sold. As always with law, there's also enforcement, and unless the manufacturer-cellular companies come together to put in some kind of unlock-detect capability, it's really only enforceable on the third-party unlock sellers. BTW, you'd probably get more utility directing your question to your *congressional representative*. At the very least you can point out how confusing the whole deal is. |
