Edit: I hope this drives down prices for the 7200-rpm 750GB Momentus XT, if there are any left, that is. Or is this new 5400-rpm 1TB drive better due to its use of a different type of Flash memory for the SSD portion of the drive?

Edit 2: After some basic research, it seems that this newest SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) uses both a slower mechanical portion (5400 vs 7200 rpm) AND slower MLC NAND (vs SLC NAND) memory for the solid state portion, but the 1TB price appears to be similar to the older 750GB price. Had my heart kinda set on the 750GB Momentus XT, now WTF?

Edit 3 (this is getting ridiculous): And NOW I read that "...MLC cells will wear out faster than SLC—about 10 times faster."? Seriously, what am I missing here?

The link did work fine, yours is actually bouncing too. The flash is not nec better, but this does write thru caching vs prev version. Performance improves by 20% in early reviews.

I suspect the 750s have been marked down recently for that reason at 100-105 , dunno if they have that many in the supply chain.

While I dont mind the change from SLC to MLC (still absurdly difficult to kill cells during typical use, ie no nonstop IOMeter benchmarking, etc) , its VERY disappointing they decided to drop down to 5400RPM. Its fine for notebooks, as most stock drives are already 5400RPM, but for desktops that sucks. Everytime you play a different steam game or deviate from what has been 'learned' in memory, that 5400RPM is going to show bigtime....

Hope Western Digital picks up the ball on Hybrid Hard Drives done right. WD Blacks, 16-32GB SSD Cache would be perfect. 300GB Raptor with 16-32GB SSD cache would be an interesting option too since most gamers are looking for 256GBish space without paying the 256GB SSD Price

Yeah, it seems to me to be more of a wash at this point depending on what the experiences of early adopters are. 5400 RPM drives with larger platters have come along way. I've got some Desktop 3.5", 2007 & 2009, 7200RPM drives that are about 1/2 to 1/3 the data speed of these current 2.5" 5400RPM drives so at least that's something. I didn't REALLY here any large numbers of Momentus XT 750's failing so it makes me question why they didn't opt for the 7200 RPM drives as I think that was what the majority of people awaiting this product were hoping for ie (same 7200RPM but with a large NAND amount).

Is there a WD venture you've read about into a hybrid drive or is that just wishing?

interesting, found a review. may have to buy one in the near future for my laptop when I get around to rebuilding it.

this seems to be very comparable to the gen2 momentus xt in terms of performance.
