Deal Details

urlhasbeenblocked is now offering a 2GB VPS for $40 per year, this time with 2 IPv4 addresses and now offer an additional location option (Atlanta)

UPDATE: The wiki went bye-bye, don't know why. Look at post 5 for most of what was in there.

UPDATE: I just found a code that seems to give you almost the same deal at $30, 2GBYR
More info from Kevin:
to clarify about the $30/yr deal. It is valid for the "Enterprise" plan listed here: http://urlhasbeenblocked.net/openvz.html. It only includes 1x IP, and is only valid for our Chicago, Buffalo, and LA location (Not Atlanta). The $40/yr STEALOFADEAL offer is separate order links like I gave you earlier, and includes 2 IP addresses. It is also available in our new location Atlanta.

This is not technically a repost, because the other thread about this particular deal got deleted. The STEALOFADEAL offer actually costs $10 more than the previous deals, and it comes with 2 IP addresses.

2048MB (2GB) Dedicated Ram
50 GB Diskspace
2TB Monthly Bandwidth
100Mbps Port
2x IPv4 Address with STEALOFADEAL
1x IPv4 Address with 2GBYR code, but $10 less, but no Atlanta
SolusVM/OpenVZ
Instant Setup (most of the time)
Free Backups
3 or 4 Location Choices: Los Angeles, Chicago, Buffalo, (Atlanta on the $40 code)

$40/year with promo code "STEALOFADEAL" & 2 IP addresses
Order in Chicago, IL - https://billing.chicagovps.net/ca...dd&pid=160
Order in Buffalo, NY - https://billing.chicagovps.net/ca...dd&pid=161
Order in Los Angeles, CA - https://billing.chicagovps.net/ca...dd&pid=162
Order in Atlanta, GA - https://billing.chicagovps.net/ca...dd&pid=163

$30/yr deal. with 1 IP address and no Atlanta
http://urlhasbeenblocked.net/openvz.html - Choose Enterprise, 1 year recurring

The promo code to use is STEALOFADEAL or 2GBYR- over $200+ in savings Just be sure to select the 12 month billing cycle when ordering then on the next page you will find the option to enter in the promo code. This price doesn't go up after the year is up either.

When signing up, use an easy password, and change it later. Some folks had trouble with complicated password during signup.

Disclaimer: I don't work for, nor am I anyway associated with urlhasbeenblocked. I have one VPS with this company, and I paid $40 for it. They aren't giving me anything. Yes, I know they should, but they haven't. shake head

What is this, you may ask? It is an online Linux computer that you have root access to, and can install and run practically anything. Read the TOS, 'cause that doesn't include P2P sharing, folding, bit coin mining, seti stuff, and anything else stupid like that, that might kill the performance for everyone else.

Anyways, like I said, you get root access to a Linux box, and when you screw that up, no problem, they give you a control panel that lets you reinstall a new OS in minutes. Pretty cool. With a small effort, you can even vnc into it with a full GUI.

Don't expect the world from this, you get more than you pay for. Think twice before you bet your business on this, although I think there are people that do.

What are you looking to do in Windows that you can not or do not want to do in Linux?
As a possible host for SharePoint (dev work, nothing production). The RAM is an issue, but since it is only for my use, I might be willing to put up with any slowness.

I'm wondering how it was self promotion, the guy had 100+ rep already when he first posted. Oh wells. Self-promotion or not, it's a good deal!

I don't see them deleting the Credit-Karma threads that the owner posts when he needs people to sign up to help stress test the site/servers...

I hate to say it, because I didn't want the last thread deleted either, but there were way too many times in that thread where Kevin posted stuff like, "Glad to hear guys! It's our goal to keep our clients happy If you ever need anything, feel free to let us know". I found that in the google cache.

As much as we appreciated having Kevin in the thread offering almost instant support, I can see how it was seen as self promotion. And near the end of thread, there was that guy demanding all cvps employees to leave the thread. All it takes is someone to mod alert the many posts with Kevin saying stuff like that, and poof, it's all gone.

Obviously someone is activly trolling these threads, mod alerting stuff until it gets deleted. I don't know what someone put in the wiki to get it deleted, but someone is desperately trying to spoil our party.

The mod alerts must be staff from VPSLAND! Haha, VPSLand is horrible.

Still debating if I should jump on this, not sure what I would use it for, since I already have a few servers and they are good.

What are the uptimes on these, and anyone know if a PBX would work fine? I hear some people installed asterisk on this..

Ever since the issues I had when setting up the VPS and the first day that it was down for ~8 hours, I haven't had any issues. Granted I don't use it for much (mainly a backup of a backup server), but the speed tests I've run were very impressive. If it stays like this, I would say it was $40 well spent.

I would advise caution running a PBX on a VPS. I explained in the other (deleted) thread why it was generally a bad idea. It's one thing if it's only for personal use as a simple gateway or for testing/learning about Asterisk, but if you plan to use it for any professional application, you will likely run into issues.

The Control Panel listed the status as online but I can't log in using Remote Desktop Connection or Putty. I used the main IP, and root as the user name. Is that correct so far? Also, what do I put as the hostname? As you can tell, I'm a total noob to this. I have to real use for this yet, just want to log in and play with the OS. Thanks in advance for the help.

Here's some up times (it was posted earlier in the thread actually): http://stats.pingdom.com/jzrszp4wfu79

I am using asterisk as a google voice to voip gateway, and it works decently -- it's better than the free account on pbxes.org with the added advantage of allowing you to pick your own codecs (like SILK and g729 which have more restrictive licenses that preclude a place like pbxes.org from offering).

So I think it's allowed, and it works. That being said, I wouldn't use this for any sort of "real" PBX system, as phonic said -- the cpu load and bandwidth is a bit too variable I think (at least, on the Buffalo systems).

You can't use remote desktop on this -- it's not windows. (well, you could install something I guess...).

So you run Putty, put in the main IP, hit "open" and then? I assume you get a prompt, then type in "root", then the password that was emailed to you, and it doesn't work?

Try resetting the root password from the control panel.

Where are you asking about the hostname?

I received the access denied message, resetting the root password did the trick. Thanks!

You'd think a forum called Slick Deals would have no problem with, well, a slick deal. The reason why it got so much press and was able to be "...self promotion plain and simple..." is that it is a good deal. I've seen operators have problems with spam but not with self promotions, not like there were many threads about this spamming the place.

Does anyone know how long it takes for the server to be ready for use after I placed my order?

I went with the NY location and I got my login details a few seconds after placing the order. It sounds like some people here are having to wait longer, but I don't know what locations they ordered. I'm thinking about ordering a second one in a different location to play around with, so I'd also be interested to know if the other locations are being setup instantly

I can't see how having kevin from cvps posting made the mods delete.
He did state that he was notified from a google alert about the thread.
The thread was HUGE with tons of questions getting unanswered about the company itself. Knowing about the thread I think it would be crazy to ignore some of the unanswered questions.
Like someone brought up earlier, even if the crazy idea of it being a self promotional thread, how would it be ANY different from credit karma? ----> $$$$!
-edit-
Wow that was weird. Somehow double posted sorry
