urlhasbeenblocked is now offering a 2GB VPS for $40 per year, this time with 2 IPv4 addresses and now offer an additional location option (Atlanta)

UPDATE: The wiki went bye-bye, don't know why. Look at post 5 for most of what was in there.

UPDATE: I just found a code that seems to give you almost the same deal at $30, 2GBYR
More info from Kevin:
to clarify about the $30/yr deal. It is valid for the "Enterprise" plan listed here: http://urlhasbeenblocked.net/openvz.html. It only includes 1x IP, and is only valid for our Chicago, Buffalo, and LA location (Not Atlanta). The $40/yr STEALOFADEAL offer is separate order links like I gave you earlier, and includes 2 IP addresses. It is also available in our new location Atlanta.

This is not technically a repost, because the other thread about this particular deal got deleted. The STEALOFADEAL offer actually costs $10 more than the previous deals, and it comes with 2 IP addresses.

2048MB (2GB) Dedicated Ram
50 GB Diskspace
2TB Monthly Bandwidth
100Mbps Port
2x IPv4 Address with STEALOFADEAL
1x IPv4 Address with 2GBYR code, but $10 less, but no Atlanta
SolusVM/OpenVZ
Instant Setup (most of the time)
Free Backups
3 or 4 Location Choices: Los Angeles, Chicago, Buffalo, (Atlanta on the $40 code)

$40/year with promo code "STEALOFADEAL" & 2 IP addresses
Order in Chicago, IL - https://billing.chicagovps.net/ca...dd&pid=160
Order in Buffalo, NY - https://billing.chicagovps.net/ca...dd&pid=161
Order in Los Angeles, CA - https://billing.chicagovps.net/ca...dd&pid=162
Order in Atlanta, GA - https://billing.chicagovps.net/ca...dd&pid=163

$30/yr deal. with 1 IP address and no Atlanta
http://urlhasbeenblocked.net/openvz.html - Choose Enterprise, 1 year recurring

The promo code to use is STEALOFADEAL or 2GBYR- over $200+ in savings Just be sure to select the 12 month billing cycle when ordering then on the next page you will find the option to enter in the promo code. This price doesn't go up after the year is up either.

When signing up, use an easy password, and change it later. Some folks had trouble with complicated password during signup.

Disclaimer: I don't work for, nor am I anyway associated with urlhasbeenblocked. I have one VPS with this company, and I paid $40 for it. They aren't giving me anything. Yes, I know they should, but they haven't. shake head

What is this, you may ask? It is an online Linux computer that you have root access to, and can install and run practically anything. Read the TOS, 'cause that doesn't include P2P sharing, folding, bit coin mining, seti stuff, and anything else stupid like that, that might kill the performance for everyone else.

Anyways, like I said, you get root access to a Linux box, and when you screw that up, no problem, they give you a control panel that lets you reinstall a new OS in minutes. Pretty cool. With a small effort, you can even vnc into it with a full GUI.

Don't expect the world from this, you get more than you pay for. Think twice before you bet your business on this, although I think there are people that do.

If you're on osx:

windows:
* http://sourceforge.net/projects/xming/
you can then basically run any GUI based application through ssh on your local box in an environment you're already comfortable with. it gives you the best of both worlds... being in a GUI you know and running applications as if you're on the remote server. the cool thing about doing this is you're not trying to run an intense 1024x768 window @ 16/32bit color with the latency from their location to yours... while minor (30ms-70ms) its still noticable... it's easier to use the above methods... once you get it running it's pretty awesome and should fit 99% of what people need to do if they're buying a $40/y option. this should also make applications pretty snappy since you're only using resources required for individual applications vs. running a full blow kde/gnome/etc environment.

Well. I bet if this post gets deleted. It is because someone spoke the truth. If Kevin is not posting on this thread but actively viewing it. I would say this was the reason it got deleted.

I can't see how having kevin from cvps posting made the mods delete.
He did state that he was notified from a google alert about the thread.
The thread was HUGE with tons of questions getting unanswered about the company itself. Knowing about the thread I think it would be crazy to ignore some of the unanswered questions.
Like someone brought up earlier, even if the crazy idea of it being a self promotional thread, how would it be ANY different from credit karma? ----> $$$$!
-edit-
Wow that was weird. Somehow double posted sorry
Mod alerts. If no one mod alerts the thread, then the mods probably won't know. Like i said, there was a guy in the deleted thread demanding all cvps employess leave. He seemed really upset they were there. Others were upset when their vps didn't work correctly out of the box. Snobs were upset that noobs were getting these, then asking noob questions. Others were upset because they claimed these were oversubscribed. If you were a mod, and you get tired of mod alerts about the same thread, you delete it. It's my current belief that one or more folks are actively trying to shut these threads down for whatever reason, using mod alerts.

I bought one and setup a Minecraft server for my kids. It's nice for them to have one to play on with just their friends. No issues here.

Assuming a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 (I also tried it in Debian), you logged in with SSH for the 1st time, and you ignore all warnings not to use your root account, because I'm too lazy to type how to set up a secondary account to use:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install fail2ban ubuntu-desktop nano vnc4server
ufw allow 80
ufw allow 443
ufw allow 22
ufw allow 5901
ufw enable
vncserver :1 -geometry 1024x768 -depth 16
vncserver -kill :1

Use nano to edit the xstartup file
nano /root/.vnc/xstartup

Make it look like so:
#!/bin/sh
[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
x-window-manager &
gnome-session &

Save the file

Restart VNC
vncserver :1 -geometry 1024x768 -depth 16

For access from an ipad, in PocketCloud, set up a connection telling the OS is MAC, and use port 5901, and test the connection to see if I've forgotten anything. Any other vmc viewer, just remember to use 5901 for the port. If you use another user, be sure to edit the /home/username/.vnc/xstartup file instead.

For homework, figure out how to start VNC automatically after a reboot, and post here, because otherwise you have to ssh into it each time and issue 'vncserver :1 -geometry 1024x768 -depth 16'
Thanks for the guide! Quick related question... I did all of this as root, tinkering around, works well. I decided to go the more secure route, make a second user account.... create the screen on the user account, and vnc in to it, I get a command line interface similar to putty.... Not the Ubuntu desktop.... Do I have to do the install process you mentioned above on the new user I created also? Will this double the amount of resources I am using since I also did it as root?

I put in a mod alert last night asking admins what was the deal with the thread and if it was violating some policy or something...

Still no response, rather unusual as they usually answer and close mod alerts with a few hours.
Probably because CVPS_Kevin was posting here and the entire thread became and advertising session for urlhasbeenblocked.
After the advertising campaign wasn't the last 5 pages full of everybody complaining the ATL servers down for days?

Anyone having issues with ubuntu 11.04, and UFW? First off, I had to download and install it myself. Second, it will not enable!

When i do ufw enable, I get "ERROR: Could not load logging rules.

Suggestions?

Why did you download Ubuntu? They already have an image file that you can do an OS install with. The image file you download probably is not compatible with OpenVZ.

Q. What ports should I open on a firewall in order to accommodate PPTP tunnels?
A. Open these ports.
TCP/1723
IP Protocol/47 GRE

I'd personally try it with just 1723 open and see if it works first before opening GRE.

FYI, My network buddies all say PPTP is horribly outdated and broken, easy to hack into.
The last time I tried I was using apf for the firewall. Only opening 1723 lets the initial authentication but no traffic passes and the connection ends since the GRE traffic is blocked. I could not figure out how to open GRE with apf and no one is even approving my posts on the apf page asking for help.

I see you posted about using ufw in another post. Does ufw work now? The last time I tried is was not compatible with OpenVZ containers. There's some hacks [bodhizazen.net] you can do. But even them it's only partly functional.
What is the setting in ufw to allow GRE?

I'm sure he meant he had to download ufw.
Tip that usually helps me when I can't figure issues out, google the error your getting and put it in quotes. Chances are if your having an error, then probably 1000 others have had the same and probably have a solution via google

So... I really don't want to do server administration, I just want to run a dozen or two low traffic and 2 moderate traffic sites. Do they have a managed server option? I would rather that they install updates and manage security for me since I know that I do not have the time to do a thorough job myself. I would rather not provide yet another honeypot to the dregs of the net.

I am coming from dreamhost shared hosting which uses a proprietary hosting control panel so I am not really familiar. Does cpanel allow OS level server management options?

I submitted a support ticket about my server not being up yet at urlhasbeenblocked and they immediately emailed back saying that it was up now, that they were out of IPs, that's why it wasn't instant.

Has anyone setup a PPTP server via CL? I just have the base Ubuntu 10.04 installed and followed various tutorials for pptpd, but can't for the life of me connect. I imagine there must be some routing issue, has anyone figured this out?
