Great price for sure.

Can not really locate any info about the HDD inside. In fact, I am in market for an HDD. It would be very helpful if someone can answer following questions:

1. How difficult is it to diassemble and assemble back the enclouser?
2. Any idea about the model # of the HDD inside?

"Guys" means "Seagate's customer service"! And yes, I did "a warranty return" through Seagate as my final decision! This is just my case that I feel need to share!

Seriously, how is that in any way going to speak to the quality of millions of drives out there? 2 failed. within 6 weeks of each other. Sounds more like maybe the case you had them in was running to hot or had a power spike.

I'm having good luck myself with both WD and Seagate. Still using my 12 year old dell desktop with 2x seagates that are 8 & 10 years old. Anecdotal evidence is meaningless when it comes to hard drives, unless you bought 1,000 random identical drives from the same manufacturer from various times in their production life, and tested them in a lab under controlled conditions, your personal experiences with any given brand of drive are just that... your personal experiences. You're always going to have the people who had a drive go bad be the ones who post.... the people who buy that same drive and use it for 10 years with no problem are the ones who will almost never post a comment about the quality.

Finally comparing the bare drives in a seagate external to upper-level internal bare drives from WD is ridiculous, those internal WD drives probably cost you double what this seagate external would have cost.

You want long-term reliability and peace of mind? Get two different brands of drives and mirror the data. That way if one drive manufacturer WAS having quality control issues when that drive was manufactured, both drives won't go out at the same time.


by the way, I'm using 2x Toshiba externals, 3x seagate externals, and 2x WD externals right now, all over 1 year old, and ALL running smoothly. Similar variety of internal drives in the 4 computers in our family are likewise experiencing good long-term reliability. Unless you're seeing reviews that point to a bad batch of drives or a design flaw, I'd ignore most of the !negative reviews of seagate or WD drives!

by the way, does anyone know if staples will pricematch amazon? I've got &100+ in rewards and a $45 gift card that would make this free at staples....

This reply is from Seagate Support. We noticed your review and wanted to comment on your experience with your Backup Plus Desktop drive. The specifications for the Barracuda drive within the Backup Plus call for 0-60C as the Ambient temperature range (or surrounding air temperature). Actual drive case temperature should not exceed 69°C (156°F) within the operating ambient conditions. SMART is reading the internal drive temperature, not the ambient temperature.

If you have concerns whether your drive is exceeding the SMART values for the drive, please run our drive diagnostics located within Dashboard software under Home>Manage>Drive Test.

I am pretty sure they will do it, though their price match policy does state that they only PM B&M stores and Staples.com
