To all the people saying Seagate sucks: What other options do you see in the marketplace besides Western Digital? The WD has worse reviews than Seagate.

I've have bad drives from both companies, but based on their Amazon reviews, the Seagate is the better of the two 4TB external HDDs currently on the market.

Why didn't people buy the 3TB from Staples when it was $99?
Even with spending $10 for $25 off $75 coupon, it is still cheaper than the 4TB version.

Then why buy a hard disk if they ALL go bad eventually? You sound like a sad WD rep. Everyone "prays" their disk doesn't go bad, especially if it holds precious data. The only external drive I have had issue with is a Western Digital (two of them, same model). My many 4 and 6 year old Seagates are running wonderfully as well as my multiple 6-7 year old and 2-3 year old WDs. WD is no better than Seagate in my opinion, even if I were to remain objective and somehow respect your obviously bias opinion.

When you buy the largest capacity in a single HDD, everyone knows you can get it cheaper per GB if you get a smaller HD.

What your paying for is the luxury/convenience of having the biggest size in 1 single drive. That alone makes it worth it. I'd personally bought 2x4TB for $500 when they came out, knowing I can get a 3TB/2TB for much cheaper...

When it comes to externals, they both offer the a 1 year warranty. Haven't both companies smartened up to the cracking the case, then filing the warranty claim, method?

Well just because you did not get lemons obviously makes you the foremost expert on Seagate Quality control. Google search for Seagate Quality control issues on the web and read the mountains of flaming they have gotten in the past number of years. Few come out and say WD is garbage and Seagate is better. A good number say they are the same. Many say Seagate stinks...they must all be wrong lol.

And unless you plan on backing up your disks to tape, disk is really your only cost effective and practical solution. Which is why people should store their backups onto 2 or more separate disks just to be safe because yes, they do eventually fail. All mechanical devices will eventually fail. The point being they should not fail at a more frequent rate then their competitors and if Seagate stood by their products, they woudl match WDs warranty. They will not, which speaks volumes.

Anyone who states one is garbage over the other has an obvious bias. The fact that you trust the opinions of the irate consumers is chuckle-worthy. The only HDs I have had fail on me before a setup was retired are two Hitachis and two Western Digitals. And you tell me "Google, see, I'm right!" which makes me laugh-- great "research" you have done by "googling"!

Yes pretty much.

That being said, externals most often contain a brand internal in the box so if the reliability of that model is in question, so is that of the external. Comes down to who you trust more with your data? I really do not trust either, but there is no large mass of WD haters out there like there are Seagate haters and Seagate brought this on itself. Many think it happened when they took over Maxtor. In relaity, it was probably a slow degradation over time in an effort to compete but there really is no way of knowing.

To each his own. I have had a number of Seagates die and a lot less WDs historically. And I have not bought Seagates in awhile at this point. So I shoud trust your opinion over that of the Google U (to say nothign of myself)?...that is pretty laughable in and of itself.

Anyone's experience can be an anomoly. So if you are the type that ignores all ratings all research of opinons of the user community and bases it solely on how lucky you are with the set of drives you have gotten, feel free. It is your money.
