I'm not quite sure why everyone bemoans Windows 8. Have you even tried it? I'm running it on my Dell workstation laptop (no touchscreen).
You can *easily* adjust settings in Windows 8 to:
1. Disable all metro apps and open everything in desktop mode.
2. Well, I guess that's about it... that's the only thing anyone ever bitches about.
On Windows 7 and previous, what's the first thing you do when you go to the desktop? Well, you click start and open the program you are going to use. The Windows 8 start screen is just a prettier start bar. Whoop-de-doo. You no longer have to click on the start button when you start up. -1 step is good for me.
Oh, and by the way, Windows 8 gets better battery life on newer computers and uses less system resources. Sorry for the hassle, I'm sure Microsoft will try harder next time.
Actually, my beef with W8 is no codec to play DVD's without buying 3rd party software..
