There is a version of the Plex Media Server which will run on this box, meaning you don't need to dedicate a computer as your media server. 6 bays means the ability to server up lots of media goodness all over your house, as well as stream it outside of your house to other devices you own, or friends/family with whom you share your Plex Media Server with (Roku boxes are awesome for this!). Add in the redundancy for keeping your media safe in the event a drive fails, and boxes like this are far from overkill. You just need to know what their home uses really are.

I can stream all of my movies, TV shows, music, and pictures to any TV, computer, tablet, or smartphone in my home with Plex. I can also access my Plex Media Server on the go as long as I have a WiFi connection. Yes, I could use cellular data, but those big media files are going to devour your data plan pretty quickly. Now if all you were streaming to your phone were music and the occasional picture, it wouldn't be any different than streaming from Google Play or another cloud based service where you are storing your music. Unless you're encoding at insane bitrates...

Will the dual core atom processor transcode on the fly? It seems weak.

I like the QNAP brand and am considering this as a backup repository for a small business.
