got to say i'm surprised by some of the comments. an integrated system has several benefits. bigger screen, voice control, steering wheel controls, lower the music when giving directions, not having to charge it, not having to secure it when parking in public or valet, etc.
i've seen some poor performing integrated systems but honda/acura has a good one imo. the dvd only needs to be updated maybe every 4yrs or so. i would imagine replacing a standalone unit in that same time frame regardless of the lifetime map updates.
$99 every four yrs seems reasonable for those benefits. is there something i'm missing?
Mine came in and I am very happy with it. The GPS is an instant lock every time. Maps are very accurate for me. Voice controls are nice when your hands (or eyes) are busy. Well worth $99 for me (coming from no DVD before).
Considering the high price one pays for navigation/gps as an option when buying a car - the absurdly high price of updated map DVDs is criminal. Boycott and just buy a portable unit for less than the cost of an update disc.
