COOLER MASTER Elite 460W power supply $20 AR + FS

I'm surprised no1 wants this - it's made it to FP quite a few times. Also 30w more than the corsair one lol

not really bumping, i was just curious as to why.

Can you elaborate why the corsair is far better? I am about to purchase 1 or the other, and I would like to be informed also.

Actually he's puzzled - when you start posting deals you think "Why isn't anyone giving this any love - I thought it was a good deal." I agree, the Corsair is stealing it's glory. The Corsair is an 80% versus a 70% PSU, so if your computer sees alot of usage it's hands down the better choice. But the Corsair has over twice the failure rate of the Cooler Master. It's has an excellent review from JonnyGuru, the OP should read it. Corsair has a deservedly solid reputation for quality PSU's, and when you look at the Newegg ratings this is reflected overall in the low number of 1 egg/DOA reviews. BUT - the 430 watt has one of the worst ratios of 1 egg/DOA reviews to the better reviews on any PSU from Corsair.

I've posted on this before - and I'm good enough at stats to have run the numbers for my wife's thesis - is that RELATIVE failure rates can be estimated from the Newegg numbers. Yes, people with problems are more likely to post them, so the actual failure rate is substantially lower, it's a very large bias. BUT - as long as the sample sizes are large enough, and these samples are with over 500 ratings for each - you can safely say that the Cooler Master has one-half the failure rate of the Corsair. FYI - I use one egg reviews, you could argue I should use one and two egg reviews as indicators, but even then the Cooler Master numbers are substantially lower.

Just look at the label, it says total 3.3v + 5v +12v shall not exceed 377.9w, so how can this Psu be 460w? Coolermaster overrated this Psu, if you do some searching, online reviews also confirms that this Psu can not even hit 400w, this should be labeled as 380w.

Another thing, this Psu has a much lower efficiency rating, maybe around 76% vs Corsair thats 82%+, for the same price Corsair wins hands down.

Oh gotcha, thanks for the clarification. I have used a couple of the corsairs in the past, but haven't bought one of these yet. I've built many computers, but I've never really looked into the math behind PSUs (mainly cause I usually just overcompensate by getting 600w-700w PSUs so it never really mattered). However, I've had to cut back my work hours significantly due to school and traveling, so I'm all for budgeting these days lol.

I guess I will buy the corsair 430w. I understand it has a slightly higher failure rate by your estimation, but I am not too concern with that...hopefully, as long as it would just fail and not fry my other components haha.

you don't have to overcompensate by getting a larger Psu's, one number I look at when buying power supplies is the 12v amperage, not the total wattage, just like speakers, its the RMS that matters not the labeled wattage, many of the budget Psu's are overrated and priced, labeled 600w but functions like a 400w.

Most of the power hungry components in the computer pulls from the 12v rail so its a more important number, if you look at some of the more expensive and highly efficient Psu's, you will see the 12v wattage represent 85%+ of the total labeled wattage.

Use the cost divide by the 12v wattage then compare them, in this instance (Corsair) $20/384w = 5.2 cent per watt vs (Coolermaster) $20/324w = 6.17 cent per watt, ratings and efficiency aside if the Coolermaster was $15 then we have a competition.

Just wait for the Antec NEO ECO 620C to go back on sale, it's $30 AR every month...

My bad, I didn't check the real info - I should know better than to trust manufacturer numbers, just not in the market for small PSU right now so I didn't double check. I have 3 small spare PSU's - two are Corsair 430w (curse you, SD). Thanks for the correction, given that plus the 12 volt cost analysis rail info posted - yeah, I'd go with the Corsair despite the poor ratio of 1 egg ratings. I WOULD (and do) plug in my PSU when I got it though and check it on an old machine. Repped.

Its a shame because I haven't seen it available for sale any longer since the last $30 deal. Has it been discontinued?
