Nope not regional. The add here in Massillon Ohio for the dates 3/21/13 to 3/27 has black mulch, 3 for $10. Pretty funny that the speedway gas station a block away has it for less and it's sitting right out in the open ready to pick up. lol Thanks for trying tho.

For some places I plan to add the free mulch from the city of LA [lacitysan.org] mainly to deter weed growth. However, to raise the curb appeal of the mulch I may buy and spray some red wood stain [homedepot.com]. I know there are those who say those free mulch aren't good since they aren't baked so pests may infest them so if any wash out of the stain harming the soil the weeds grow in I'm trying to kill sounds alright to me.

It's not on sale in San Jose. Instead of the $1 red mulch bag, we have the 3 for $10 2 CU. FT. ALL NATURAL BARK NUGGETS. Frown

If you really need mulch and it's not available in your area and/or $1 per bag is just too pricey for you, just call a local tree trimming service near you. They give wood chips away for free.

But wood chips aren't exactly as good as "true" mulch.

I'll let others chime in...but for one, you may end up introducing carpenter ants and termites to your property...so never put free mulch near the house.

Also, depending upon type of tree that was ground up, it may not break down or have proper nutrients...
