Not turn based in any way, more an action title. I wouldn't say hack and slash since that to me usually means random button mashing.

The Monster Hunter games are very much one of a kind, aside from the games which copy the series. The gameplay is simple, take quests, kill stuff. Items you find are used to make new weapons and armor, or to upgrade. Your character doesn't level or get stronger, it is all about the weapons.

There is a little grinding if you are trying to upgrade, but much less than most rpg's since you don't spend forever leveling. Don't expect a story, or really anything new after you have seen the first few hours. You will do the same thing over and over. Take quest, kill stuff, upgrade stuff, repeat.

The game itself can be tough at times, some monsters take many attempts to learn patterns methods. If you are a fan of Dark Souls or Demons Souls this game will likely be a good fit.
