I live in Omaha NE (average temperatures get in the single digitals during the prime-winter months). Is it good to buy separate "winter wipers" for the winter, and than use all-season blades for non-winter months, or just get all-season blades and change them once a year?
The "winter blades" are generally the same except a rubber/plastic skin to prevent snow/ice buildup inside the mechanical bits. However, with the popularization of the 1-piece rubber wipers, there's no real benefit in winter blades.
Regarding alcohol/silicone sprays/WD-40 - the real benefit is to remove sand/grit/dirt from the rubber wiper that is in contact with the glass. The removal of the abrasive particles stuck on the rubber blade extends the life of the rubber. Alcohol or similar solvent based cleaners will dry natural rubber and causes it to crack, so try not to use that. Instead, just use regular soap and water. Using spray lubricant may extend the life of the rubber wipers, but will probably cause streaks when you use the wipers, which I cannot tolerate.... YMMV...
In reality, there are 2 failure modes for wiper blades - loss of spring tension (which you can't prevent...its the design/material), and the degradation of the rubber wiper in full contact with the glass windshield. The life of the rubber wiper depends on many thing - sunlight (UV) degrades rubber. Snow/ice/rain/dust/sand/how often you clean your windshield will all affect the durability. Also, in the end, different expectations come into play: some people think that if they can see any light come through the windshield, the wipers are working great. For those lucky people, wiper blades last a life time! For the unfortunate few of us, we will replace our wipers at the slightest hint of streaking or noise.
