Is there a way I could ask Comcast to update the firmware since they seem to haven't done so on mine yet?

Model Name: SB6141
Vendor Name: Motorola
Firmware Name: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.8-SCM01-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot(25CLK) 1.0.12.18m3
Hardware Version: 7.0
Serial Number:
Firmware Build Time: Aug 30 2012 15:35:46
I guess you could call in and have them reboot your modem? or ask for the new firmware, they will do it if avail.

I purchased an SB6141 just three weeks ago for use with Comcast.

Installed easily and got amazing 34 mps down, 4 mps up speeds.
Problems began the next morning
The 34 mps was down to 2 mps, sometimes dropping out.
Sometimes back to 34 mps.

After 10 days of inconvenience, and hours and hours talking on the phone,
rebooting etc. They could not fix the problem.

Comcast customer support folks were surprisingly nice, BTW.
They even sent an installer to check the house wiring.
I gave up and purchased a Zoom 5341, which has so far worked perfectly.

I'm saying all this because Comcast has a history of similar problems
with the previous SB6121 model, that uses the same firmware as the SB6141.

This Comcast support forum [comcast.com] has 620 postings about its issues.
Similar issues with the SB6141 with about 50 discussions LINK here [comcast.com].
Be aware and check it out before buying.

This sounds almost EXACTLY like the ordeal I had (unstable speeds/dropouts and Comcast not being able to help despite hours on the phone) except my issue duration was a little less than a week, and the resolution was different (I purchased a new splitter for the connection outside the house).

I think I purchased my SB6141 close to three weeks ago, too.

Just a quick warning. Comcast customers using the SB6121 have since August of last year real issues with connections timing out and the router rebooting itself. There's even a 13 page thread concerning this here [comcast.com].

It would seem just recently (3/12) that comcast just updated their firmware for the SB61xx (see here [comcast.com]). I have no idea if/how this will affect performance but just the same I thought I'd mention it.

Many of the users of the SB6121 got fed up with their modem and went with a similar Zoom DOSIS model.

Thought I should mention this if any of you run into any issues with your SB6141 in conjunction with Comcast.

I think if you have Comcast's phone service you have to use their modem.

I have the Blast tier which was 24 down / 4 up. It just got increased in my area (Houston) to 50Mbps down / 10Mbps up. I only have a Docsis 2 modem right now and see speeds of 28-30 down and 10 up. Other people that already have a Docsis 3 modem are seeing the full 50/10. Check your bill to see which level you are on. If it is "Performance" a Docsis 2 modem is still fine. Blast or Extreme and you would want a Docsis 3 modem to get the full speed.

Actually you can get free VOIP with Comcast by purchasing a third party VOIP system like the Ooma system. I haven't paid a red penny for phone service since purchasing this unit and it has worked well.

Could you tell me a little more about this and what kind of package with them you do? My parents are fed up with the normal price of Comcast Triple Play but insist on having a land line.
Would this mean that they buy something that does VoIP like the Ooma, and then just stick to a double play TV and Internet package?

Reading Amazon comments someone claims that white are the consumer models and black are only able to be purchased through cable companies - so any purchases of black not from cable company are likley used or something. (I merely assumed they were OEM but who knows). YMMV and take it with a grain of salt I guess.

Either way I also linked it to Amazon for price matching just in case. Just cuz I have Prime and returns and issues are handled with greater ease on Amazon than ebay or other locations (the extra 8 dollar premium if Amazon Matches is worth the piece of mind for me anyways!)
I have the black one. It was not purchased from a cable company and it was brand new.

The biggest advantage for the white 6141 is that often times, I understand that they come with newer firmware than most of the black 6141's I've heard about, including mine. That said, this may or may not be a big issue; I've had mine installed for about a month, and haven't had any issues with the older firmware on mine. I just checked the logs on mine, and it looks like there was a brief blip in service on the 10th, but since then it's been working just fine.

(Keep in mind users cannot upgrade their own firmware; it has to be pushed to the modem by the provider, and some providers like Time Warner Cable do *not* do firmware updates.)

I do have to say that I bought from modems-modems and was thrilled with the service. I bought the modem on Saturday, and got the modem by the next Monday. The modem was clearly new, although in the brown-box that is sold to providers rather than the retail channel. If a pretty box is important, buy from NewEgg.

I am in the exact same boat, except I'm still looking for a deal for Blast and haven't signed up for Comcast yet. If anyone know of a good wireless router or a good Comcast deal, please let me know!

Thanks,

Can anyone recommend a modem for use on Comcast? I have the SB6180 which doesn't look to be supported and I'm starting my service with Comcast soon. The SB6141 looks to have some issues per this thread, so is there something else that works well on Comcast as an alternative.

I would say that the SB6141 works with Comcast just fine [for me and just about everybody else]. There have been some caveats noted in this thread, but such would apply to just about any cable carrier really.

At a very minimum, if you're buying from this Newegg deal, you can return the device if you are not satisfied with it.

I had to call to get special offers, you should try as well. Depends on your area. picked up 30 mbps, upgrades to 50 at the end of the month for 29.99.
