How good is the 75-300 on a Canon E400D Rebel XTi? I have a non-zoom lens on it, the 50mm 1.8/f EF. Which of these three will be the best addition to that kit, or would you recommend something else? I'm looking to get a bit of zoom for my kids' soccer games.

That Canon L cost a lot more than the Tamron 28-75mm. The Tamron is a proven good lens in respect to its cost.

I highly suggest not buying Tamron. They're fragile, and the manufacturer does not honor their '6 year warranty' by claiming 'shock' damage. They make you ship your lens to them only to tell you it'll cost $400 to fix. I took it to a local mom&pop camera repair place and the gentlemen mentioned that a few years back, Tamron started refusing to sell parts to them, so that they can no longer fix the lens.

at least that was my experience, I had the SP f/2.8 lens that used to go for $650.

you're lucky. I spent $150 fixing mine when it broke and sold it for $300.

(Tamron wanted to charge me $400 to fix it, claiming it was 'shock' damage and thus not covered)

if you have any local camera repair shops, I'd suggest talking to them about Tamron. Mine mentioned that they've gone downhill in the last two or three years. YMMV. My personal experience was that it was great when it worked, but the internal mechanism is fragile.

I own 10 lenses, including the Tamron 17-50 and the Tamron 28-75. Neither of them have given me any problem. I would expect "repair shops" to see lenses that need repairing. I. Also think most people that are serious about their photography send their lenses to the MANUFACTER for repair and especially if its an expensive lense. I'd suggest talking to photographers that own the Canon, Tamron, and Sigmas. I have five Canon L lenses and they haven't caused me to want to get rid of any of my non-canon lenses. Also, if you buy a "cheaply made" lense from any manufacturer, you should expect it to be not up to par. NOTE I said cheaply made and I didn't say cheap cost. Two different things.

A lens of this range is usually your walk around lens. IE, the lens you keep on the camera.

Not having the 28-44mm equivalent range means you will have to change the lens more often, esp indoors.... which is where you would want to use the constant F2.8.

What is a better deal? The Lens w/$75 visa card for $457 or this package:

If you'll use that 1.8 Nikon lens a lot for low light stuff is this the better deal? I don't know that I've ever seen that 50mm Nikon lens drop below $100, and even if you factor in the gift card, which you have to wait several weeks for, the price difference is still just above $100 more to get both lenses.

I guess I'm missing your point. Walk-around is dependent on what a particular individual shoots. The lens I keep on my camera is the 70-200 f/2.8 is. BTW, f/2.8 and even f/1.8 has plenty of uses other than indoors. There's nothing wrong with changing lenses when needed, thus the reason for primes and the other many assortment of focal ranges. Often people assume that what they consider to be "their" walk around or go to lense is what others should use. Impossible to say that when not knowing what others most used focal distance is. I shoot 80% between 70 and 200. I think you understand my point. And yes I own lenses that go much wider and longer for when the need arises.

I would say buy the package if you need the 50mm.

If you are the fence and you are a casual photographer, pull the trigger on the 18-270mm Lens. I take this lens everywhere and it is great. I am not a pro photog, but for travel and regular day to day shots it is great.
