Do you have any recommendations for a drive that can be dismantled and the bare drive can be hooked up to any computer to recover your data?
i've been staying away from WD crap since i discovered that on all their external harddisks (ok..so i've tried my passport and mybook) they have this small circuit board which handles all the IO. basically what that means the partition info is stored on there and so if your external drive "fail" for any reason you wont be able to extract any data even if you break out the harddisk somehow and manage to plug into any computer.. a strict no-no in my book!!
anyone know if this would work with the $50 ebay coupon that you get for selling anything electronic related on ebay? I got my coupon today and it expires on april 6th. sadly it can only be used on electronics related. if it does work this would end up being only $19 for me
Seriously, this is not that great of a deal and yes you will see the prices drop on these. With the 4 TB drives coming out these smaller drives loose thier value so the price drops. Be looking to see these at 49.99 by the end of the year
Passport vs elements
Price is virtually the same, Google doesnt turn up a significant difference between the 2 except that the passport looks better, has a shorter USB cable and annoying virtual partition with pre-installed software
Anyone has personal experience?
Is there any negative of the Elements drive? especially compared to Passport....
Some posts mention Elements can be used with Mac and PC wheres Passport can't. While other reviews say the opposite....quite confusing.
Any external can be used with a Mac, the 'Mac compatible' ones are typically pre-formatted to FAT32 to be usable on both operating systems while Windows-only externals are formatted to NTFS for better performance and removing the the 4GB file size limit. Feel free to buy any HDD and format it to FAT32 or alternatively exFAT which is also compatible with both Mac and Windows but instead has a much larger 256GB file size limit, exFAT simply isn't natively compatible with Windows versions older than Vista such as Windows XP.
