As I need to go full frame soon, I'm thinking about selling my T3i and all lenses, and going Nikon instead. Hard to justify Canon's camera lineup with respect to performance vs price. Not a bad deal on a 60D, but I would look at Nikon's offering first. But who knows, Canon may take the lead in 3 years again, but for now, Nikon is killing it.

I upgraded from a T3i to the 60d and I love the 60d. IT's so much easier to shoot in manual, Av and Tv than the T-series. Worth the extra cost IMO. |

This discussion on the Canon warranty is very interesting. I wonder if someone buying a Canon camera from an authorized retailer (say Best Buy) and give it to someone as a gift. How can the person receives the gift prove it that he/she bought it from an authorized retailer?

You can buy the refurbished version from Canon for $611.

one thing i need to get around to looking at is how the nikon system compares to the canon system. from the little research i've done, the nikon lenses seem a lot more expensive than the canons'. i'm very ignorant about the nikon system though. Last edited by mattni; 03-22-2013 at 03:07 PM.. |

Camera choice is such a personal preference it can get quite heated in online forums. In the battle of 60D vs 5D I'd say it's pretty close. Bottom line is either one will allow you to capture fantastic photos. CF cards cost more. Transcend 16Gb CF for $23, SD is $10 on a deal. SD card are more often on a deal. SD 8Gb EyeFi is kind of cool too. Save $30 using SD. CF cards work just fine, slightly bulkier. " From a pure image quality standpoint, it'd be better" So there you go, get a 5D . Either have a camera with cool functions, or images of higher quality. For this reason alone, you should get the 5D. Camera bells and whistles mean nothing when the picture is hanging on the wall. You have to decide, will the additional bells and whistle help you capture the shot? FPS is often touted as a comparison, but compared to film, digital have such slow FPS that you usually get the moment right before and right after the moment you wanted. Even 6 fps isn't fast enough, 60D is 5.3. People think high FPS is useful, and it can be, but not until you get to 10+. I prefer to watch the motion and predict what moment want to capture, then trigger the shutter. I've captured more precise action shots sniping, than any FPS machine gun approach has gotten me. The slower FPS is due to the full frame shutter having more mass. It'll also affect flash sync speed, advertised as 1/250s but likely closer to 1/160s. Studio situation is no problem with either, but outdoor or bright ambient situation, you have more control with higher sync. If you like off camera flash, the 60D is a better choice. Humm, actually if off camera flash is your thing, don't get a Canon!! Seriously, Nikon flashes dominate Canon's into embarrassment, and I'm a Canon guy. 5D screen size is tiny. I traveled the world with a Rebel XT, the screen is the same size as the 5D. I had no issue using it at all. Then I bought a 40D with the bigger screen and I couldn't imagine using the tiny screen again. So if you haven't seen the riches of a large screen, the tiny screen will work just fine. Still, the screen size would make me lean to the 60D, I would struggle going back. I'm not sure how a APS-C (on a 60D) sensor is gong to out perform a full frame sensor? I've no idea, but it doesn't sound likely. Maybe there's a comparison? I would expect the low light (high ISO) performance to be better on the full frame, but maybe the advance in sensor tech is matching the 5Ds quality? In a similar vein to the screen size, the full frame camera's viewfinder is much bigger. It's awesome to use compared to the APS-C small viewfinder. As you'll spend 99.9 percent of you time shooting using the viewfinder, a large one is really nice to use. Going back to my 40D fro my 5Dii sucks. It's like picking you the XT after buying my first 40D. The other 0.1 percent of the time you might, might use live view. I personally have no use for the live view. I thought I'd use it a lot when it was introduced, but truth is I almost never use it. The new Android app DSLR Controller is perhaps a future use, but right now, I choose not to use my battery to see the same thing as I can in the viewfinder. If video is your thing, then 60D all day long. Swivel screen is much nicer for video. So I'm a photographer, not a videographer. I want nice quality photos. If I could live with the screen size I'd get the 5D, but would be happy with either. Give and get photography critique [goingManual.com]. And likewise, the difference between 3fps and 5.3fps is nearly double, meaning that in fast action I shoot (kayaking rapids, skiing, etc), getting twice as many shots means I probably captured the right moment. It's nice to assume I'll snap the shot at the perfect time, but again, why take the inconvenient route when the camera gives me options. Back to this deal though, if this retailer makes you uncomfortable, I've seen several other similar deals lately. Most would involve selling a lens to get the same price though. Likewise, you can go through Canon Loyalty and get a refurb body with 90-day warranty for about the same price Last edited by preppyak; 03-22-2013 at 03:40 PM.. |

Sometimes it's important to understand exactly how much you don't know.
