Yes. Does it hurt the speakers?

Hey, good question. So here's the deal... Clipping an amp (driving it beyond it's ability to generate the waveform, therefor a nice sine wave becomes a square wave because the top of the arc is 'clipped') is the real danger to speakers.

Driving a low powered amp within an inch of it's ability to deliver power is much more dangerous to your speakers than driving a higher powered amp to the same level.

Basically more power is always safer, as long as you don't clip, or push the speakers beyond them becoming a fuse....
Good question, good answer.
Just to add on; here is a good video that makes it easier to understand clipping.

This is an excellent deal if you don't need a receiver with 7.1 analog inputs or want to use Audyssey eq. The pioneer mcacc eq doesn't eq subs unfortunately. I plan to add a sub to my system down the road and have heard very good things about what Audyssey can do for eq'ing subs. If only this had that as well! Otherwise, it's an extremely robust feature set.

To me it sounded just as good as the SC-35. I ended up returning the 35. I like all the new features that come with the 1522, especially the control app for the Ipad. It handles my 4 ohm speakers fine. I'll probably look into adding front height speakers now. If you're on the fence about it just buy one and test it side by side like I did and if you don't like it, return it.

Seems my question yesterday was lost in all the e-chattery, so I'll post again:

Thanks... 90% sure my Elite (VSX-21TXH) does not have the Class D nor "ICE" amps that came on the higher end models. I think the 21 uses AB topography but at least has discrete amplification for each channel, and thus good power, esp. when pushing multiple channels. Just wondering if the sound on these newer models is any better, considering how impressed I already am with the model I have. Thanks again for your feedback.

Thank you for noticing that. Helped save me a lot of time. Instead of having to sell my SC-35, I was able to return it for a full refund yesterday.

Pretty sure you are wrong on return time frame. Website states:

Home Theater/Receivers are not in the list.

Can I use my existing Panasonic HTIB sub and speakers with this receiver, until I can buy new speakers and sub.

Is there a way to change the ohm setting on this or it auto detects?

Great deal, trying to decide myself whether to upgrade from my Denon 3311CI. $660 after tax (CA) is still quite a bit of change considering all the BB/Magnolia deals that have been going on.
i'd be happy to help you unload your 3311 if you pick one up...

i don't know about the regular MCACC but the advanced MCACC does EQ the sub and also has standing wave correction. my SC-35 has the advanced and IMO it is far better than the audyssey. I tried Yamaha, Marantz, onkyo, and pioneer elite in the same room with the same speakers, all within one or two models of the top of the line at the time, and the sc-35 with advanced MCACC did far better than all of the others.

I picked one up - my wife will set me up with a shrink when she finds out.
Great unit; biggest plus is the effcient Amp (class D) draws only 330W -compare that to similiar models-
Sampling rate: 32bit/192kHz DAC (nice thing)

downside - just for FYI but not a deal breaker for me:
No 4K upscaling (upscales to 1080p though). who has a 4K display anyway?
Not WiFi - must buy seperate wireless dongle AS‑WL300 ($120) if you want to utilize that feature.

i have to agree with this. the advanced MCACC (1021k), in my opinion, is much etter than audyssey (809). you actually know what's going on with adv MCACC and you can turn them manually, with audyssey... they do everything for you and you have no idea what's going on the background or how the system calibrate. it just tell you it is done.

i do have to point out audyssey support multi point whereas Adv. MCACC only support single point. but honestly speaking, single point is good enough for me.

Thanks y'all... Good to know.

One more question, only the newer 2013 models claim to work with iPhone 5 (lightning adapter)... Since my VSX-21 doesn't have Airplay (which may largely make this question irrelevant if I can get non-iTunes apps like Spotify to work via Airplay), I'm curious how this SC-1522-K handles the iPhone 5.

My VSX-21 works, but it's real sketchy and basically won't sync with the phone unless I'm actually playing a song when I plug in the phone... Not a huge deal, just have to remember this and explain it to friends wanting to plug in their iPhones.

Thanks!

There were 6 at the Hillsboro OR store today. I was surprised they had any. While I was getting mine another guy grabbed one also.

There were 16 of these at my Costco Monday, 15 after a guy on another forum bought one and posted the a pic of the remaining units, and still 15 today. Looks like I'll have a chance at one when I get paid Mon.

And if they drop the price a week or two later, customer service will pay me the difference right?

Absolutely, one of the advantages of buying at Costco, I have never had a problem with their customer service.
