There's barely a difference between the 1st and 2nd gen models. As others have said, it's just slightly thinner. So for this price, yes, great deal.

(I have a 2nd gen and love it, but would have had no issue getting a 1st gen)

Just check compatibility on their site (http://widgets.nest.com/compatibility/) - thats the only major diff for a 1 vs 2 - also if you have a whole home humidifier you'll need a 2.

I picked up 2 nest 1's from lowes at 198 and got 2x100$ rebates for them no problem. Very happy with them - they've been great!

I was on the fence for about a year on getting one of these and then funally pulled the trigger last black friday when they were $149 at Lowes. Even if it's doing the same thing as my previous thermostat, I love the "geek" factor that goes with these.

For instance - last night I was sitting at work in the middle of the night and I know my little ones have been coming down with a cold or something. I remembered that I had turned off the AC/HEAT since the weather has been nice, but at night it gets a little chilly. So I logged on my phone and turned the heat on because I didn't like the temp the house was at. All done while my family was sleeping and remotely. Big Grin
It was $198 last Black Friday at Lowes. Also, the heat/AC only operates when it reaches a set point, why turn it off.

I work with a bunch of people who think turning the thermostat higher than normal warms up the room faster. It is a mechanical switch - there are two settings - on or off. When you turn the them up higher all it does is make the system run longer until the room gets to the temputure setting, which is too high. Then the 12 people in the smal room with computers act as a furnace too.

No prob - Worth noting:

If there's any question, they recommend using a professional installer because if installed wrong on a whole house humidifier/dehumidifier it can damage the whole system.

I got 2x WIFI 3M's (3M-50) for $60/ each with $10 coupon at Home Depot last week. Now that's a deal. Not this NEST ripoff (where you CAN'T even set the temperature to the exact degree you want to)

Atleast MA, and a bunch of other states - offer a $100 rebate on these (up to 2) so you would get it for $80.

MA rebate

Live in MA, but no gas. That is a great rebate.

I honestly don't understand the fascination with these things. "It learns your schedule"? Don't you already know your own schedule? I program my schedule into a $40 programmable thermostat and it works perfectly. What does this thing actually improve on?

Any diff on 1st and 2nd gens for those who have it?
2nd gen supports heat pumps. 1st gen doesnt. if you have a heat pump and install this you will be pissing away energy.

With the 2nd gen, in addition to being slimmer, the entire unit spins and is made out of steel. With the 1st gen, only the front 1/4 is steel and spins.

Mine is a 1st gen and it supports our heat pump just fine. And when they uploaded the software recently, there was some feature that was added for heat pumps. Don't recall what it was.
