[QUOTE=hautedog;58478910]The only thing my $50 programmable thermostat does not have are the sensors, which from my reading of reviews is not very effective.

I'm guessing these sensors would only work properly for one person living in a studio (or some kind of single room accommodation along with the thermostat)

The sensors are a little quirky but for the most part work just fine. So share with us the <$50 thermostat that does everything the nest does, short of the sensors. That's a great price. Geez, you can control it with your iphone and everything?! That'll be front page for sure!

Anyone find any rebates for Oregon? I think you would search PGE correct? I wasn't completely sure what to search. Found a good deal on a gift card but would love to get an additional amount of money off obviously.

sooooo, it came out to like 195 after tax on amazon, so i went ahead and got the 2nd gen on ebay shipped for 225. shipped lil faster too. I am most interested in what I am hearing about the auto-away feature. Is it possible to make the program realize when either me or the girlfriend are home by our cell phones? I have heard the auto-off has been used before by the nest not locating a cell phone on the network and shutting itself off. lemme know if anyone knows anything.

Got my two Nest thermostats in today. Took me about 15 minutes to install the one downstairs and about 10 minutes on the one upstairs. Got everything working and it downloaded some updates along the way (Software version 3.0.5).

It's already been mentioned on this thread...it's the3M-50. I don't believe it's available anymore as it's been replaced by a different model.

Not sure if it can be controlled by an iphone as I don't have one but I can control it using an app on my android phone.

If your schedule is extremely regular then it won't save you a whole lot over a traditional programmable assuming you have it dialed in properly. It does have a few small features like Airwave that will run the fan a little longer after kicking off the furnace/compressor to get the most out of residual heat in the air handler (assuming humidity is low enough), but that isn't completely exclusive to Nest.

The Nest proximity sensors are capable of discerning pets from people.

Remote access is definitely the killer app though. It's great for days where you might only intend to be out of the house for an hour for lunch, but your lady friend ends up turning the day into an 8-hour shopping excursion. It's definitely a nice feature to have. I don't even touch the thermostat anymore; I use the website to control my thermostat if I'm hot/cold in my home office, and leave my phone on my nightstand to make any adjustments if I feel the need.
Can you please expand on your experience with the proximity sensor and auto-away.

My current thermostat is non-programmable because I moved into a new house about a month ago and they had a very basic 'stat.

I have been eyeballing the Nest for quite some time and think this is the perfect time to upgrade (since my current stat does not even allow for a schedule or programming).

My worry is that the stat is in a hallway that does not get much traffic. Our floorplan is more open and we do not walk by that area much. How close do you need to be for the proximity sensor and how would the Nest work with Auto-Away if we come home and don't make a point to walk past the thermostat?

I just put in all new hvac, soup to nuts. I went with a wifi honeywell 7-day programmable the nest for me wouldnt make sense. Every location for the thermostat that saw any traffic would've been within a couple feet from a vent. So it's in the dining room on a far wall in a zero traffic are for a full 180 degrees. Just don't see the point of the Nest. I have a 7 day programmable for the first level of cost savings. Have remote capability to override the programming if my schedule deviatess for the next level.

$12k got me a 96% efficient gas heater and 15 SEER AC from Bryant along with a humidifier, electrostatic filter, direct vent water heater, and a new 2nd flr return to make the system more efficient and quiet down the whole system. The noise level with the 2nd return is night and day. Also has a 10yr parts and labor warranty and 3yr maintenance agreement. This is all before rebates from IRS, Peco and Bryant. And if you don't know the Bryant name, it's the same as Carrier. Will actually use my AC a little this summer. Didnt at all last year.

Isn't $179 the standard price at Lowes for the Nest first generation? If so, how is this a slick deal?

The rebate posted for 50% off purchase price up to $100 max is a slickdeal if you have gas service from the participating providers.

You do know this was posted over a month ago, and has been over as a deal for a little bit now?

You do know that $179-$199(tops) has been the running price of the first gen since day one when the second gen came out. So my comment still applies.

A price drop is a price drop. Even if it becomes the regular price, it's still significant. You have countless people who weren't even giving the Nest a second thought because of the price, not even having it on their radar until this thread. So 20 pages and a +66 later... But you must be right. Sorry for doubting your wisdom.
