Dell sell used servers on ebay. I got one for 125 shipped with dual xeons 16gb ram and four hot swappable bays. I have 16tb thanks to Costco and xen on arch linux. I am running four instances of arch linux, freenas four instances of server 2012. I have free pbx installed for my googlevoice and cisco phones.
Tried to PM you but it is not working today. Do you have the seller name or a link to similar deals?

Thanks.

I agree, but there is a difference between threadcreapping and offering a differing point of view. You do the latter by stating facts. You do the former by doing this...

or this...

or this...

There were a number of users who positively contributed to this discussion with their differing opinions. And there were loud threadcrappers.

That was actually a singular thread crapper.

Not plural.

Originally pulled the trigger, had second thoughts so cancelled it and after sleeping on it tonight I decided to go for it. Deal is dead Frown I should have looked at the mail in rebate and seen that it was for purchasing on 3/25 only before I decided to sleep on it. Oh well. Next time.

Hi,
Just wondering, how are you copying your data over ? Do you use any software or tool to guaranty all files are copied over? I am in process of copying over also but don't know how (beside drag and drop). Thx.
Use rsync if possible.

How many watts does this use when idle?
My exact question, and how loud is it? I have an awesome server box at home that I got for $50 shipped, but it's loud as F. Still trying to mod the fans.

Don't feel bad....see if you can build something better using some of the suggested cases in the first few pages of this thread. That along with some SD deals before the next N54L sale may give your something more flexible, powerful and with more expandability options etc.

There you go.
Calculated usage is approx 160ish watts.
idle estimates are around 35 watts according to pcpartpicker. however, that mobo only has 6 sata ports, but not a big deal. it's a good budget board, and even supports some decent overclocking and ecc memory. also, i def would go for the cx 430 psu at that price point. not a bad build though.

i have the older n40l. it's a nice little machine, with extremely sff and runs really well. although the hdd bays arent hot swappable, it's still a really convenient design. many tool- less design features, and when it does need tools and screws it has them handy. i think it has it's applications, and not everyone is comfortable building and supporting a pc.

It doesn't take into account the $20 480W power supply, which is probably around 60% efficient at that low of a load. At the plug, we are talking about 60W or so.

Typically PSUs are more efficient at low loads, not less. But any PSU that's only $20 is probably not a platinum plus efficiency killer.

Um, unless you're talking about a 120-150W pico psu, typical 500W power supplies are less efficient when talking about loads less than 100W

Here's a graph of various 300W-450W power supply efficiencies, and as you can see, efficiency goes down at lower loads

My bad, thought we were talking about the 160 watt load, not a measly 35 watt load.

Just thought of another thing: I have ip security cameras outside my home which also streams live that is stored on this server. I can remotely access this server via dyndns and review security video while I'm on vacation.

What type / brand of IP cameras do you use? What software allows you to store / view the feeds from the server?

I've got a N40L with 8 drives + 1 SSD (OS) for a total of 30tb usable (parity storage space).

They are great machines.
How is that possible? 8 drives w/ parity 30TB usable?
