Looks like deal alerts do work Smilie

Not quite the $99 they had on a previous deal but nonetheless good deal to check it out with before I buy another.

Good price. I have 2 of these and bought my 2nd one when Dropcam had a 20% off sale with free shipping. I saved on tax by buying through Dropcam. This is a good deal for someone looking for a baby monitor which I'm using it for.

Does anyone have any experience utilizing this camera as a do-it-yourself security system for his or her apartment/home?

I considered this camera, but be aware that all video is uploaded to their servers, so it will use some of your bandwidth. Live streaming is free, but to view stored video, you must subscribe to their service. Not saying this is really bad or not worth it, but this made me decide to go another direction.

how is this compared to one of those pan and tilt wireless cams the go on sale for like 80 bucks once in a while.
This is the amazon link
http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-FI98...pd_sim_p_5
It just seems more expensive and doesn't have the pan and tilt option.

would love to know how is this compared to foscam? I ordered two of these, but would love to get some feedback before opening it.

We tried three of the Foscam cameras - couldn't get any of them to work via wifi. Very frustrating...they only worked when plugged into the router. So we tried and love the dropcams - so simple & easy to use. Plugs into any wall outlet. We use them to look in on our Great Dane and can view live video from our iphones, android phones & computers. Not as many features as the Foscam but the dropcams actually work.

I set up three of the Foscam's as well on three different networks. No problems at all. Plugged them into the router for initial setup, then entered user/pass for wifi via web interface, unplugged from router and that was it. They have good support too if needed. Did you call support? No subscription fee's on the Foscams and you can record data on an sd card or a network share. Not that the dropcam's aren't good...just for me, I'd rather not pay a subscription on top of paying for the camera itself.

Almost and apples and oranges comparison. I have both a dropcam as well as some of the foscams and they are very different. The foscams can pan and tilt using a motor inside, the dropcam does not. The foscams can be set up to record video on your own computer while the dropcam is either for live streaming or storing footage online, which costs money. Hooking up the dropcam and getting to see video instantly on my phone & tablet with little or no setup is extremely easy. Getting the foscam set up to do the same is much more complicated and some people are never able to get it working properly. The foscams that I have, the 8910W which used to be posted about regularly here on SD, are much lower resolution and the framerate is TERRIBLE. Truly horrible. So bad that, had I known the specs before buying, I would have never bought one.

I much prefer the dropcam even without the pan and tilt. Very easy to set up, the images look good and the camera itself it much smaller and more stylish. It was extremely easy to set up in my home.

The foscam will do 30fps, but only at the QVGA resolution (320x240) which is like a postage stamp sized and useless. So bad that, had I known the specs before buying, I would have never bought one.
