Read the first three - or was it four - books as a teenager. Saw both this and the SF Channel miniseries. Both were good, but for different reasons.
1) The movie is much less directly faithful to the books. There really was no choice at the time, you needed a LOTR or Game of Thrones treatment to get them right. Supposedly there was a special 5 hour edit in the making, but due to conflicts with the director and the producers it didn't happen. It's a shame, because on recent movie out, Kingdom of Heaven, receiving the Director's Cut treatment is substantially improved. Of course, sometimes movies ARE edited to cut the extraneous stuff out.
Interestingly, though, this version captures more of the atmosphere of the stories. The Harkonen are more than simply bad guys, they are degenerate but effective monsters providing an enemy in the books and movie. The mysticism of Dune itself and the Bene Gesserrit is done well IMHO, though the "voice" bit was both unnecessary and was over the top. Good movie despite it's shortcomings, I wish it was being made today into a multi-movie franchise.
The SF channel version was a faithful version of the book. The only thing I had against it was that it seemed drab. If you could somehow have taken the best characters from each version, stick with the SF channel dialogue while letting the original director and screen play people to the atmosphere and timing, it could have been an superlative endeavor. Sadly what we have are these two choices, not poor or shoddy but underwhelming. I found both versions worth watching, and own the OP's version Blu-ray - and paid around the same to, so I guess that shows I think the deal is alright.
