I've been using the Walmart app on my android phone for a good 3-4 weeks now with excellent results. Aquired good amount of 22lrs, 9mm, 380, 7.62 and 223 rounds during that time. Luckly I have 13 walmarts in my city and was able to hit the walmarts that have the ammo in stock.

You can find the free walmart app on android market or itunes. And these are what I learned so far while using it.

1. When it shows the ammo is in stock, it means several things. As soon as the ammo is scanned at the main warehouse, it shows its in stock. That means the ammo is anywhere from the main warehouse, on a truck and being still transported to your walmart. Or, it's sitting in the back of the stockroom at your walmart (in pallets) and not taken out to the floors yet. Or, shady employees are hiding it so they can buy it later.

2. Walmart is the most efficient and has the most advance inventory management in the world. If the employees are telling you different about the app, then they are misinformed or wrong. There are too many coincidence where I went to the walmarts that showed "in stock" and it was there. And too many times, after I buy the last box, 10-30 mins later, it shows "out of stock".

The other day, I went to one of the walmarts early to pick up some 22lrs that shows in stock early in the morning. Was told by the worker there that they didn't get any shipment in that morning. I stated otherwise...... manager even came to me and stated the same thing. Instead of arguing, I left to hit up other walmarts. Came back 1 hr later (app still showing its in stock), sure enough........ after I left, 20 mins later, they brought out that night's ammo shipment. Same again with walmart #2. Worker and manager there swore there was no shipment. But according to the app, the ammo that shows "in stock". changed to "out of stock" by 10am.

3. When it shows "limited stock", it means there are only 1-3 boxes left.

4. Find out when your walmart start selling their ammo. Usually the ammo shipment arrives in the evening and they wont start selling it until the morning. Mine is usually around 7-8am. Every walmart runs different. Some have 3 box limit, some has 1 box limit, some open at 7am, some sell ammo all night. I usually check the inventories at night and plan which walmart to hit in the mornings. Usually the app gets really busy around 6-8am and might crash.

5. The people I've been telling to about the walmart app been getting really lucky. Sure beats waiting in huge lines at bass pro shop or academy. The lines are usually sparse here since not alot know about the app.

Happen to stumble on a gold mine at glockforum.com forum. Using the Walmart app to scan barcodes off ammo boxes to search certain ammo that is not showing up on the usual search. So naturally they saved the pics of the barcodes. Now I can search for tulammo for 9mm.

Great thanks to the original posters in these threads below.

Looks like when I use the iPhone app it only checks the closes 10 stores. We live in indianapolis and there is a Walmart on every corner. Used the app on iPad and it lets u see store avalibility in a map view. Works better for me. But never tought of this. GREAT POST!!
App for the ipad will give a map view of all the walmarts in your city. Very helpful if you have more than 10 walmart stores. Thanks Kegjon

The app hasn't worked out for me yet at 3 different walmarts, but i suspect the employees must be keeping the ammo for themselves. I'll keep trying and thx for posting this up OP any info on potential ammo in stock is better than no info.

This is what you do, not that I have to do this. But others in my area have done this.
Talk to a manager and say that the employees are hiding and buying the ammo. They are not supposed to ring themselves up. They are also not supposed to buy more than three box or whatever the store policy is. Then ask for the store manager's boss or regional manager. This will straigthen them up. I have seen some crazy arguments at the WW in my area between employees, managers and the other gun crazies. Work your way up the food chain Smilie

Thanks for the tip man. I probably won't take it that far I live in the dallas area which seems like the walmart capital of the world with one on pretty much every corner. I just started trying with the app a couple of days ago, but if ends up a recurring problem at many locations I may ask a manager about it, but it's not really my style. the walmart workers are so underpaid and in general mistreated that I can't really fault em for trying to make a few bucks reselling ammo, if i worked a crap job like that I'd probably take any chance i got to turn it to my advantage, it pisses me off that I can't find any but I understand their situation as well

Was having luck with this .. Not so much now. Anything I search for ( 22lr, 9mm, 40, 45 , 223, 762, 357, 38sp, 30-30.. Ect) nothing comes up in stock in my area of about 11 walmarts .. Not sure why as just a few days ago things were popping up in different places.. Saw some hope, not much right now. Ill keep trying .

Showed in stock at my local WM but nothing on the shelf. Lady claims inventory checker is wrong. I asked for a manager who said "we have four boxes but it's not here yet" and that I'd have to wait until it showed up...whenever that is. I suspect shenanigans.

DeadBirdDog,

the deal is that if you are seeing it during the day then it will not be on the shelves. Normally the WW put the ammo out at 7:00am so you have to see there then, be prepared to wait. Now our WW there are 20-30 people waiting. Many people just go there and wait and don't even know if there is any ammo or not!

If the inventory checker says it is there is there! But it might not be there for you to buy Frown

The shipments coming in are usually sporatic. It can go few days without ammo, then bam..... couple of walmarts would get shipments all at once.

But shipment of 7.62 tulammo been consistent for me, not so with other calibers. So the app is still working.

It was on there last night...and I was there early to see. I suppose there's a chance it just wasn't stocked yet but since it still shows in stock ...who knows.

Nope. Bare shelves of ammo has been a common sight for couple of months now. And when the sporatic shipments of ammo comes in, it barely last 1 hr. So yeah, 0 stock sounds right.

Dam. 20-30 people are too much. Luckly over here, it hasn't been like that at walmart except Academy and Bass Pro Shop. 20-30 waiting in line everyday and never know what ammo comes in until the stores open. My time is valuable to waste my time on that.

This will hopefully be the short on everything Wal*Mart but probably not. First my knowledge source. I am some what embarrassed to admit it, but until about six months ago I worked for that company. Original six months at one of their stores then almost seven years at a distribution center then, after working elsewhere for a few years, about four years at another store. I worked shipping, receiving, registers, sporting goods, electronics, and virtually everywhere in between.

As to the main question, employees holding or directing ammo for certain people, this is against policy. All merchandise is to be sold on a first come first serve bases to customers. No employee is allowed to hold anything until someone they know comes in or until they get off work and become a customer. There is some leeway, and it is usually left to the store manager to set the policy, when a call is from another store with a customer looking for an item. In that situation the store that has what the customer is looking for often considers it sold and holds it for the customer coming form the other store. With items in short supply this is often limited to an hour or so if it is allowed at all. The reality of it though is that it happens. Employees violate policy and put merchandise back for themselves, friends, and good customers. The only way they get caught however is if management is made aware of it with enough information to catch them doing it. An example would be you go up to employee A and ask for item X and they say the store is out, five minutes later customer B comes up ask for X and employee A sells it to them. If something like that happens, by all means tell a manager and get them to have the employee explain themselves. You may not get what you came to buy but the employee may be out of a job and unable to hold the next one back from you.

With regards to stock do not trust walmart.com. Walmart Stores Inc, is based in Bentonville, Arkansas they have stores all over the world and distribution centers in every state but Alaska and Hawaii, unless they have added some since I left the DC. Walmart.com is based in San Francisco, California and even in this electronic age nothing is truly instant or 100% accurate. When walmart.com says something is in stock all that means is that when their system last checked the stores inventory via corporate that the inventory control system had a record of the store having a certain amount of that item. It does not check where in the store that item may be or if it is ready and available for purchase. When a trailer arrives at a store and the trailer number is entered everything that was manifested on that trailer is listed as "in stock". While I could load one of those trailers by myself in an hour or two, because of the sorting process it will typically take 3-4 hours to unload. Also, the freight is not brought straight to the floor but kept in the warehouse area until they are done unloading, run out of room, or have people available to stock the shelves. This means that most everything will remain back there until 9 or 10pm when the night crew hired to stock arrive and the majority of the customers have left. Because of that unless you are a "good" customer even if walmart.com and the employees hand held scanner say they have what you are looking for, they will never go back and check those pallets. Other instances where something is "in stock" but not available are when it was accidently left at the DC, a customer has picked it up but not purchased it yet, and damaged returns that have been placed into inventory by the return but not removed by the claims process.

Specifically to ammo, Wal-Mart, unless they have very recently change, does not ship their own ammo. The only ammo you are likely to see on a Wal-Mart truck is the cheap .22LR and shotgun shells. Any hunting or personal protection ammo is direct shipped. Because of that they have basically no idea when the will get more. On the bricks of .22 and bird load shells if their hand held say it is "in transit" that means it should be there that night or the next. The same thing with regards to 9mm for example means that UPS is supposed to be bringing them some but they have no idea when.

Good tibit of info on the inner workings of ammo delivery once it arrives from a former walmart stocker. Random stuff I thought it was good to know when surfing the net. But yeah, the app is alot more accurate than the website. And even if holding ammo is against their policies, workers still do it. If you see them physcially hiding ii, report directly to corporate. Alot of ammo now are being directed by corporate nationwide and will put a stop to it. Like rolling away with boxes of ammo without stocking it, or seeing boxes of 9mm behind the counter and telling you they sold out.

And this poster caught one of the walmart employees trying to hide 5.56 420rd ammo can but got caught. Reporting them to corporate will quickly get a a$$chewing to one of the managers. 1-800-walmart

We are getting ammo at our WW every day! with 15 locations within 20-30 minutes We have been able to score 2-3 rounds of ammo everyday (not including 22LR, since they are cheap) but almost getting 22LR everyday. You have to send multiple people out where the ammo is and that's how we are getting the ammo. Today there is 556, 9mm and 380 in the 100 round boxes! I plan on getting everyone I know out there about 30 minutes before opening so we can snag all the ammo. I think this week we have got over 20-24k rounds of ammo including the 22LR. If your smart the ammo is out there. At least in our area. I personally am collecting the ammo and will not be selling it. I also have some clients that I pay to pick up the ammo and send it to me. Theya re all over the USA so it helps out also. I plan on starting my own ammo business when the Zombies come Smilie

I've been checking the app at least times per day (7PM, 10PM, 6AM, and sometime midday) for the past week and not once have I seen any 22lr in stock. Haven't checked 9mm or 223 as religiously, but I also haven't seen any of this. Makes me wonder if NH stores are scanning things into the system.

I'm going to continue with the app for another week in hopes of finding some, but I wanted to share my experience.
