They have horrible customer service! Their product maybe cheap or good but the customer service is terrible.Deal has now ended. DEAD.

This is NOT an internet service provider.
More info on what a VPN is and why it is useful: http://lifehacker.com/5940565/why...your-needs
  • You may connect with up to 3 devices simultaneously with a single account.
  • A router that supports DD-WRT or Tomato can connect and counts as 1 single device.
  • The regular price of the service is $6.95/month or $39.95/year.
  • There are 263+ servers in 9 countries and growing.
  • Port forwarding is available in the application or with a script/API available on the PIA forum.
  • DNS Leak protection is available in the application's advanced settings
  • Internet kill switch kills any internet access in the event of a VPN connection drop and is available in the application's advanced settings.
  • A SOCKS5 proxy is also available.
  • Bitcoin and Ripple are available as payment methods. You can buy bitcoin on a Bitcoin exchange.
  • If you pay with any service other than Bitcoin or Ripple, you will be automatically charged the full $39.95 price next year. But you can unsubscribe at anytime and still use the remainder of the year you've paid for.
  • Every purchase includes a 7 day refund period.
  • In terms of security, OpenVPN>LT2P>PPTP.

Here are some alternative VPN services that have large selection of servers (worldwide)proxy.sh is $5 month

Setting up BT software Vuze (used to be call Azureus) to only use VPN connection (won't connect if VPN connection not available.)
Here is a tutorial of it.
http://wiki.hidemyass.com/Tutoria...hrough_VPN
Here's a tutorial for utorrent: http://wiki.hidemyass.com/Tutoria...IP_binding
(Remember to un-check make new firewall rule in utorrent settings/prefs)

Enter the interface identifier into the field next to "Bind to local IP address or interface" in the settings.
Note that the interface identifier is named different on every system, so make sure to check how exactly it is called on yours.
In their example, it is "eth15" for OpenVPN, "net2" for PPTP" and "net1" for L2TP.

Make sure the checkbox next to "Enforce IP bindings even when interfaces are not available" is checked;
otherwise it can happen that Vuze keeps downloading without using the VPN.

If the Vuze setup is done correctly, it will ONLY use your VPN connection. If you didn't login to your VPN service, Vuze won't work.

Rock...I bought it and went back without linking through here and price was back up to $3.33 per month. I now check and it is back down again. Get it while you can as it may change again.

Just reading this "you are using Windows. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER use Windows or OSX if you really need to be secure. Use linux. " makes you doubt the credibility of that user.

That is one big downside.

Anyone know if this is a function of Thunderbird, or of any email client through a VPN (and, if so, would it matter if the server/IP is in same country)?

Is there any configuration work around (and links?)?

i authorized the "application" which i have no idea what that means, i'm not about to switch to a different server though. I don't need random ips anyway.

Back in my young 90s early internet days, we used bouncers to connect to places to hide our ip, essentially vpn is a bouncer i guess.
I'm not using Thunderbird so I'm not sure how useful or applicable this is to you, but I'm using Postbox (which is based off Thunderbird since Thunderbird is at End of Life) and it works fine. Connected to multiple accounts from the Switzerland gateway and a few different US gateways and didn't have any problems.

I'm also using Google Apps instead of regular Gmail so don't know if that makes a difference either.

From what I understand the SOCKS5 proxy is unencrypted. So while your IP doesn't show up in the swarm, your ISP can likely sniff packets and throttle or possibly send a notice. Is this a real concern? Do the letters ever happen from ISP sniffing or just from having your IP in the swarm?
Would SOCKS5 proxy + VPN enabled be even better? I wonder if that counts as two connections.

Overkill to use both, especially unnecessary from the same service provider.

Definitely overkill and will dramatically affect your speed.

my earlier post in this thread stated that it is unencrypted. IPS will most likely throttle you at worse case scenario. You don't have to worry about receiving a letter. Its not the ISPs job. The main concert with SOCKS5 is that credentials are not encrypted. The data passing is irrelevant.

With regard to this service, can it be installed and used via Google TV to open up some streams that are blocked?
As long as there is an option to manage the vpn on the device (like "Wireless & Networks > VPN" on a phone or tablet), then yes. Im sure it would depend on the specific device and version of gTV it's running.

Thanks. I've noticed problems when traveling out of country when using TB, but the links I provided earlier seem to indicate that this is a Google "protection" to prevent theft, for which Google has a specific workaround.

Did a quick check on Postbox...$10 seems reasonable for ability to install on more than one computer (for family). We've customized TB a great deal, but you are right on end of life, we will have to find alternatives. (Will it read TB mail files?)

Not sure if it will read TB mail files. They offer a 30 day trial so you can always check it out.

Also, they occasionally offer discounts. They offered a few discounts last year (check SD, I posted one) so if you aren't in a rush, you could always wait it out.

Since this is off-topic, feel free to PM about it.

Took a bit of scrounging around and found this link (migrate from other email clients, incl TB):

I have this service manually configured on my Macbook Pro as well as my iPad and my Android phone. You don't have to use their application to initiate the VPN connection although their application is the only way you can enable port forwarding.

]Thanks for answering the questions. I actually have 4 devices I want to use VPN on, but never all at the same time. Is it possible to have all 4 devices setup to use VPN, just not simultaneously? How do you enforce the 3 device rule?
You can do this through escalation with billing or, the best way, would be to cancel and resignup at the end of your subscription. We apologize for any inconvenience.

So short of starting to run virtual machines, one cannot torrent with the VPN and put the downloading files on a NAS because the NAS is part of the local, non-vpn network.

So I looked into using a SOCKS5 proxy for uTorrent with them, but the PIA support rep told me that's unencrypted, so what's the point?
The SOCKS5 Proxy is in fact unencrypted and is provided for users who simply wish to change their IP address rather than encrypt their connection.

We include access to several gateways internationally. You can checkout some of our increasing locations and servers at https://www.privateinternetaccess...es/network

In terms of a VPN service's specs, what am I looking for in order to know whether or not a particular country is accessible? For example, some streaming providers in China won't allow US customers to subscribe. So I guess I would need my IP to show that I'm in China.

So when it says.... "Home Country: United States, and has exit servers in the US, Canada, the UK, Switzerland, Romania, and the Netherlands."

Does this mean I should look elsewhere? I should look for a service that has China as part of the list?
Unfortunately, we do not currently have gateways in China. Our team is working on new locations which are in progress. It takes time to get the bandwidth we require ready in some areas where high bandwidth is usually unheard of.

Can I install java and hadoop on the servers?
We provide VPN access. We are not a UNIX shell provider/VPS provider.

Was checking out Private Internet Access forum for possible new VPN location.

Looks like they said they will have new HK gateway back in Sept 2012 and they first said
"Hi lemon - we do have an HK gateway that is in shipment."
And then on Oct 2012 they said
As for the HK, we were told it should arrive by the 10th of October (but we'll see).
follow by
There is some unfortunate delay in the HK yet again. Due to datacenter issues, we are now looking for a new home for our HK gateway. We will fix this ASAP.
And the NOTHING afterward. No info, no update.
https://www.privateinternetaccess...cements/p1

And now is already April 2013 and nothing is going on. Based on that, seems like Private Internet Access is not that reliable and after 6 months (since Sept 2012) and still can't deliver what they promised.
We sincerely apologize on the delay on HK. One of our providers promised us on dates and continued to push back. Finally, they abandoned their HK project altogether and, in hindsight, it seemed almost like a scam. We had already prepaid significant funds and as such, we have terminated our relationship entirely with this company. We are now in process of building out new locations and we thank you very much for your patience on this project.

You can use our service when traveling outside of your home region to access streams that are geo specific. Google TV may or may not have built in support - but if it does not - you can still connect Google TV through a router that has DD-WRT or Tomato built in.

As always, if you have any questions, please contact our 24/7 support team with a ticket on http://support.privateinternetaccess.com/ or on our website at https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ through live chat. Live chat is generally always available unless there is too much ticket volume

I'm not a constant downloader so I think it makes more sense for me to sign up for a month or 2 here or there when I have built up a download queue. Will the monthly price be increasing in the near future and if so, what will it be?
