Texting a group without them seeing everyone else's number?

RUsum1 9,543 1,696 April 1, 2013 at 06:03 PM
I never knew this until recently but when I send a text to multiple people I guess it shows the other phone numbers to everyone I text. Is there a way to prevent this in Android?

So you want to send 1 text and have multiple people receive it, but then none of them are allowed to reply all. Kind of like a BCC for an email.

The reason you can see everyone is that it is supposed to be a GROUP conversation. You are basically inviting 5 people over to your house to chat, but then saying they have to all sit in different rooms, haha. Is the problem that YOU don't them seeing eachother (telling your 10 mistresses that you love them all at once) or that they are all replying and carrying on 10 different conversations (each one of your 10 Aunts is telling you about their latest surgery all at once and don't know who your Aunt from your other side is and getting upset/confused)

I do not know the answer but searching...basically you are looking for a BCC on MMS.

EDIT: Obviously the #1 answer, as always....you need to install a new rom LMAO Sigh, Android Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Try this:

Go to "compose mms", then for the destination contact go to "one ime only", use your own phone number and then go to menu and you will see the option for cc and bcc

sux cuz u'll have 2 send yourself a copy of it, but at least you'll get to send it to your desired recipients!

You could use one of the group SMS type apps.

what phone do you have? on my droid 4 i was able to just change the default back to "individual conversations", since there are almost no occasions where i'd want to send a true "group text".

Within the texting app:

menu key>settings>Default group message type

eta: i can still send a group text at will, but have to manually change the type for that particular message before sending

Doesn't that just make it so when you REPLY to a group convo, that you only send it back to the person that sent you the message? If you were the one initiating a group convo with that setting on...it lets you create 1 text but then appears like you just sent 10 in one instant?

Ninja edit...darn you, haha

So, you CAN'T send a group message with that setting on. It doesn't do anything to hide the phone numbers...?

nope. the only way to do that (avoid REPLYING to everyone when you receive a group message) is to manually delete all the other people before sending your response

yes you can, but you have to manually change it for that particular message before hitting send.

if i add more than one person as a message recipient and then hit the menu key, i have the option of changing the message type to a group text

individual messages = i send one message to many people, but each conversation is just between me and the one other person. you can also tell by the way it's threaded on my phone. when i send an individual message to many people, all of the previous single conversation threads i had with each of those people is updated with the new text.

group message = i send one message to many people, chatroom style. on my phone these messages create a brand new thread consisting of all of the people in the group (or update the existing group thread if i already have had a group chat with that particular circle of people).

ahhhhh, that is what I thought you were getting to, that sounds like the answer right there.

unfortunately there's no way to block someone else from sending a group text that potentially gives your number to a bunch of a random people, but at least i have the option not to send them. it's dumb that companies have made that the default.

as an aside, in trying to find a link with more info, it appears there may be an iOS bug such that you have no control over that (even if you turn off group messaging), UNLESS you also turn off mms. i didn't spend enough time searching to get clarity, but it is something to be aware of.

Kyle: Dude! I almost thought those Afghani kids talked you into not liking America.
Stan: No, dude. America may have some problems, but it's our home. Our team. And if you don't wanna root for your team, then you should get the hell out of the stadium.
Kyle: Yeah.
Stan: <salutes the American flag> Go America.
Kyle: <salutes> Go America...
Stan: Go Broncos
Kyle: Yeah go Broncos.
Cartman: Yeah...

Well, they work perfectly when people use them correctly, and I don't always agree with setting a default based on the ignorant users only. Texting was never designed or thought of to be a mass messaging / Facebook Wall Replacement. In typical use there really shouldn't ever be a reason to send a text to 20 people, only for something out of the ordinary like a business, and then you should be running something special anyway.

MMS works great for starting a string when you are going out with ~3-4 people to all keep your plans straight. And in that case, you'd want it to default so everyone saw who else was on it.

mini rant: Texting just bugs me because it is stuck between functional and incorrectly implemented. There shouldn't be any sort of texting plan anymore...it is just an email sent to your phone with push notification instead of an @ account.

I opened up the text app and went to settings but I see no option for a group message anywhere. I'm on a Galaxy S3. What you're describing is exactly what I want to do though.

look into pygooglevoice - it works well at sending, not so much receiving (yet)
