Insurance, your regular car insurance will usually cover you. ask your agent.
BUT, if you don't have collision on your car, you won't have collision on the rental.

Check with your credit card company. They usually only cover the deductible
not the entire claim. I went through this once and my CC did cover the deductible
in an accident that was my fault.

The details of the insurance offered by Avis are here
http://www.avis.com/car-rental/co...der-faq.ac
There are different levels of insurance. Best to check with your insurance to see
what coverage you need from Avis.
I know it is a pain and expensive, but a co worker is going through this right
now. He did not have insurance and hit someone else and is now paying
$5000+ for his accident because he did not get the insurance.

Most credit cards will provide insurance coverage without purchasing additional insurance from the car rental company
That's true but you should be aware that the credit card insurance is not the same as what you buy from the rental company. The rental company insurance is primary insurance and will cover damages etc. without involving other insurance. The credit card insurance is almost always secondary insurance and kicks in after your primary personal auto insurance policy pays. Also, some of the credit cards (American Express in particular) do not cover "loss of use" which can be ridiculously high. I had the misfortune to find that out when someone damaged the side of my rental car (dent/scratches) while it was parked in a parking lot. I'm sure the damage didn't take more than a few hours to repair, but the "loss of use" fee that Alamo tried to bill me for was more than what I paid for the whole 4-day rental! Fortunately I had Visa and not Amex, and I spent several hours on the phone with the Visa insurance rep and the Alamo claims person, and eventually negotiated it down to something more reasonable.

That said, I have never bought the rental company's insurance except when I rented a car for 2 weeks in Spain. It was pretty much required for that rental.

Very true. Good point.

I tend to use my Amex card and have signed up for their premium rental car coverage - https://www295.americanexpress.co...ge/home.do $25 flat rate for up to 40 or so days, and it is primary coverage up to 100k.

My free reservation from last week's deal was cancelled ($15 in taxes and fees for a two-day rental), so hopefully this one stays ($46 rental + $26 in fees)!
