Info from 1 review...

Other Thoughts: The water tray is shallow and doesn't hold very much, and the auto evaporation process can't always keep up. Fortunately, the unit automatically shuts off when the tray is full, so it won't overflow. Be aware, if the unit isn't sitting level it could spill before triggering the shut-off sensor.

I raised mine up and removed the drain cap/plug(2 parts) so it could drain continuously into a bucket. It pulled about a gallon and a half out of the air in one night. Before doing that it had filled the tray and shut down twice, each after about 30 minutes of operation.

Great deal if you don't get a defective unit like most newegg reviewers did.

I've seen ones that were great and super quiet. I guess it depends on how much you're willing to spend.

I probably will bite at this, I've had my central AC die two times during the peak of summer for stupid things (blown fuse and dead capacitor) the last two years, and my window unit is ugly and annoying to set up. Figure I can sell it and use most of the money to buy this. I noticed all the negative reviews on this are for last year, so I'm hoping newegg got their s*** together on packing and refurbing the thing.

BTW, I've been told but haven't verified this, that portable A/C units by nature are more ineffecient than their window counterparts. I'm not sure why, perhaps the long exhaust hose? Datacenters use the same sort of design to cool down "hot spots" with portables also, but they're probably better quality than home units.

May be because their condenser coil assembly is still located inside the room which it is supposed to cool (though hot air is pumped out via the hose ) Vs outside the window in window units.

I'm in for one. I almost bit a few days ago when it was $20 more. I imagine it should work fine for a small bedroom.

In AZ, I would not worry about the water not evaporating as some of the reviewers mentioned was a problem.

That and the single hose models like this draw air from the entire house and blow it out the hose, so you'll be drawing warm, humid air through any and every crack and seam into the rest of the house unserved by the unit. Most window units let you set a recirculate/exhaust option and the recirculate option gives you more efficiency.

Insulating the hose with some duct insulation and improving the window plate with some sealer and insulation is pretty helpful. Two hose models improve further on the efficiency.

I bit. I've wanted one of these for a couple of years. About 10-15 days a year its too hot at night to get away without a/c, and I have a bunch of vertical sliding windows that wont support a window unit and the local cc&r's prohibit them.

Seems like the big problems are:

- Unit is shipped without sufficient packing and a lot of them are smashed on arrival...not that big a deal, if its smashed when I get it, it goes back
- Unit leaks water after some period of use in humid environments. Its not humid at all here, and I can stick it in the master bath on the tile floor.
- Loud. Which is pretty subjective. Again, if its too loud I'll stick it in the bathroom around the corner. Most of the noise complaints have to do with the compressor cycling, and since I'm going to put it in a somewhat larger room than its intended to cool, I suspect its never going to shut off the compressor.

Some people complaining about the unit failing after a few years. At this price point, while I'd rather get 5-8 years out of it, if it drops dead in 2-3 years I won't be too upset.

Wish I'd looked at the warranty before hand. 30 days replacement only, no refunds. 30 days parts and labor from the refurbisher, Sohnen Enterprises.

From reading the reviews, they had mentioned a one year warranty. Not for this refurb. shake head Still a great price. Hope it lasts the summer...

I'd have liked that, but you'll pay 2x this price even for refurbs on sale, and 400-500 for a new one thats super quiet and has good reviews.

Not thrilled with the practically non existent warranty, but I'll roll the dice a little...had I noticed the 30 day non-warranty, I might have bought the $20 one year warranty at the same time.

I got one. In NYC if I end up not liking it I will get my money back on CL. The noise complaints do concern me.
