For those interested in a smaller, rugged tablet with 3G/LTE capability, I think this is a great price with free shipping. I have purchased the same item from the seller when it was closer to $200 after coupon and it came in like-new condition. Tablet radio can be unlocked with a code to use with other carriers. MicroSD + microHDMI included as well for extra storage.

Is this really waterproof or is it more water resistant? Can I take this into a rain storm and use it without worrying? Can I drop it into a puddle? (Obviously the water will interfere with actually using the screen)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code

IP57 means is very dust resistant, but not absolute, and it's rated for 1m immersion for 30 minutes. Sounds like a rainstorm is no problem.

According to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab25xxVcc0c - seems to hold up pretty well and works fine once it dries up.

I got one of these for my mom a while back. I personally LOVE it and am considering getting one for the wife and kid to use. The 8" 4:3 (1024x768) formfactor sucks for gaming (many games are totally incompatible with the device and others have glitches or missing onscreen UI elements) but for stuff like Angry Birds and whatnot, it's awesome. DeadTrigger and RipTide GP are 2 of the more notable 3D titles that play great on it. It is totally waterproof and you can dunk it under water provided you secure all of the port covers.

The screen is not fantastic but by no means terrible. It's definitely better than a cheap Archos or no-name Android tablet screen. It's probably comparable to the original Xoom or maybe a tad better in viewing angles. 16Gb internal storage with a microSD slot. One problem is that there are only 1 or 2 official aftermarket cases designed for the Element. Build quality is solid but not Apple-level. The plastic coating is a little slick but not too bad. I still think 7.7" to 8" is the perfect tablet formfactor.

Battery life is pretty good and charging via conventional microUSB is a huge bonus. It comes with a 2A charger btw. MicroHDMI is a huge plus as well. A shame this tablet will never see JellyBean or a 2nd generation as it's a fantastic value for the$. It is great for reading e-books and PDFs but not as swell for movie watching due to the black bars (ala iPad 1/2/Mini).

Does anyone know whether the battery can be replaced if it goes bad or it won't hold up the charge? My limited knowledge about all these Android tablets is that a lot of them have really crappy batteries that do not hold the charge and within a year they crap out.

This appears to be a decent deal now. But if you want Jellybean & a more solid build...check this out: $169 Slate 7 [cnn.com] ...due out in April. It may be another HP fail and they end up dumping them for $99 or less...LMAObouncenod

This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHpW4FMiqlU @ 1 minutes 40 seconds states that the battery can replaced by the manufacturer, not by consumer.
I bet FixIt or other site must have a way to open it. But finding a replacement battery may be hard.

How is Honeycomb on this device?
Has anyone tired to root the tablet? What's the latest ROM available?
mine came with honeycomb but i promptly updated to the official update to ICS. ICS works well.

can anyone comment on using this for reading pdf?
That would be a very good use for it.

more like water resistant, less 'proof' but it should survive a drop in a puddle, rain, or a spilled beer (provided all of the ports are closed up)

agree mostly, but disagree with the screen form factor being bad for gaming. personally i use it for emulation so, actually its PERFECT for gaming Smilie

this is a name brand, is fast, and has 4g and HDMI capabilities.

youd have to crack open the device yourself, which would most likely leave you less than waterproof afterward. the android tablets you seem to be referencing are the ones user vizay is used to seeing. chinese crap products that they build out to form a pretty spec sheet, but cut corners on build and component quality. While not user replaceable (ie on-the-go) i would not expect the battery to crap out any time soon, at least enough to warrant replacement.

Yes, I was referring " Pantech Element Waterproof Tablet 16GB 4G LTE (AT&T) Refurbished - $149.99" which was included in most of the EBay daily deals for over a month or so...

If you want performance, the Nexus is absolutely the better choice. However, if ruggedness, microSD slot and 4G radio are important to you - this tablet is hard to beat for the asking price.

ah OK. i caught this on a previous deal too. still a great price for this device, which is probably why it gets reposted frequently.

an ATT one yes, for another provider you will need to unlock the device.
edit: maybe not! apparently some providers only allow some SIMs on some APNs like AT&T
