I have bought two unlock codes on ebay from the same seller, both worked. I applied the unlock codes before I did the ICS update. The ICS might block unlocking (not so sure), but you'd better unlock before ICS.
The cellular radio unlock is always permanent and should not be affected by the OS version running on the device. I have unlocked with Ice Cream Sandwitch (4.0.x) without any problems.
For those who have this tablet, how is it for watching movies/shows. I'm considering getting this for my husband who knows nothing about computers, but wants to watch the local news in the morning. it is between a kindle fire or this one. I like the idea of being able to skype with this one, (camera) as an option.
Provided whatever station has a dedicated Android app for streaming the video - it should work fine. Video playback inside the web-browser will depend on the particular website, I can test it on my tablet if you want to provide me with the specific address. The tablet is more robust than the original Kindle Fire in the sense that it gives you access to the full Android system, including support for Widgets and no restriction on the Android marketplace for apps, so you can install all compatible application directly from Google Play.
I have had this tablet for 7 months now. Battery is holding up well and I use it for everything.
If I have one complaint, it's that the partition sizes are set way too low. So despite having 16GB of memory built in, I am constantly running into space issues (new app installs or updates) despite moving all movable programs to the internal SD.
The waterprooof part seems to hold up. I use it when I take long baths and I've dropped it in quite a few times.
I have not used this with a data plan as I use my phone as an accesss point.
Another positive over the Nexus 7 is that this has a rear camera and not just a front one.
If you are running into app compatibility issues (i.e. you can't find a certain game in the app store), you can try using Market Helper or change your build.prop (do this ONLY if you know what you are doing).
Mine took forever to charge. Also this device takes a while to turn on (you must hold down the Power button for 10-15 seconds sometimes). I paid $180 for mine and would buy again at $149.
Just got mine today. Didn't have to charge it and worked out of the box. Been using it for several hours. Look great. No scratches on screen but a few scruff marks on the back. So far so good. Will load some videos tonight to see how it plays and picture quality and stuff.
got mine working finally. After several attempts resetting the unit and holding the power button, I changed USB cords first and saw no red light. The charger was really hot and had a burnt smell to it so figured let me just try my nook ac adapter. Put the USB cord in and red light appears. Let it charge for 30min and turned it on. Good to go.
I did find it quite amusing that they did a factory reset but decided to leave images and music. There were about 20-30 images in the gallery. You could see it was in an AT&T store
So looks like the refurbished units could be demo units from stores. Luckily mine didn't have many scratches on it overall. There is a slight scratch on the front screen that I will see whether it will bother me in the long run or I can live with it
Be careful mine was delivered with cracks on back panel
I received mine this morning, and in 5 minutes I decided to send it back. This tablet looks like it was dropped on the staircase from 3 floors as it got cracks on all four corners. I have bought many refurbished products but never it was so bad. And the worst part is that I will end up paying for return shipping.
My suggestion, don't buy seller refurbished (factor/manufacturer refurbished are okay).
