Cedar 4ft x 8ft x 1ft Raised Bed Kit - $99 (orig. $185)
Home Depot has the Frame It All 4 ft. x 8 ft. x 12 in. Raised Garden with 1 in. profile Cedar Timbers on sale for one week starting today. Cedar naturally resists decay that other woods suffer from when used as raised bed.
Better deal on a different brand. Its worth it for me to buy pre-cut since I don't have the proper equipment at our new house. It cost approx $25-30 more than buying all raw materials but its worth it in my case right now.
I was just gonna say this. Cedar is pricey but not $99. I would suggest just using 4x4 landscape timbers. They are dirt cheap too. Literally, they cost less than a bag of dirt.
I'm interested in building these. Can you give me a link or two where I can find great cheap lumber? Thanks.
The landscaping timbers I've seen that cheap are not true 4x4, but an oddball dimension (it's dark and cold and I'm in PJ's or I'd go out and measure them) with flat tops and rounded side. They actually come in two different sizes, and I've had much better luck PM to Lowes when HD has a special like they do this for a couple of cents under $1.50.
They no longer use arsenic for landscape timbers, but they DO use a pretty potent fungicide in them if memory serves me correctly. I just leave them out for year, or plastic line the inside/soil side for vegetable gardening - sometimes I do both. I still wear a dust mask when cutting these fresh, as while maybe not as unhealthy as the old arsenic crap, it's still not something I want in my lungs. A true Organic Gardening purist would argue that you should never use anything pressure treated near what you eat - but either plastic or a year of weathering and I'm not too worried, the vast majority of anything that's going to leach quickly will already be out of it. You'll notice the color changes after a few months, which I suspect is a good indicator the worst stuff has leached out.
