Man, that's pretty expensive. I built myself an 8bay NAS, with 24TB storage and RAIDZ2. Only and extra $200 compared to this...
One can definitely build a NAS for much less, but with a Synology you get the software ready to go on all devices. No need to manually find one app for every single purpose. I use mine to stream audio to my car via my phone, use the surveillance station for my cameras, as well as the standard NAS functions. I have the DS411+II and for me it was the best ~$600 I spent. I put in 4x 3TB Reds in their and its doing the job. On top of that its consumes only 40W.
I have the 1812+ with 5 western digital reds and I love the setup. Got the NAS for 925 and the drives for 130 a piece so with this deal I could have saved about 50. So over all seems like a good combo.
i have the 1812+ and love it. using the crashplan headless agent to backup my stuff! recently purchased a cisco sg300-20 and now using lag with the 2 ethernet ports.
