Had been using a Sans Digital 4-bay e-sata RAID setup attached to an always-on PC successfully for 2 years. Power supply died last week. Luckily I had a 5-bay Sans Digital NIB from Black Friday '11 and was able to throw the drives in and get back up and running...only to start getting a string of BSODs in Windows. With an ever-growing set of data, it's more important than ever for me to have a hassle-free solution like this so I am ditching the Sans Digital.
$1400 is a tough pill to swallow but I'm through fooling around with these hardware only solutions. I hope I'll agree with others that it is the software that ends up making this deal. I also like the fact that it'll be real easy to add an offsite backup solution by throwing another Synology in the mix (assuming I'm happy with the first).
Tried to build a SH2 and it wouldn't work. I figured I would upgrade my previous 1812 since it still had a 1TB drive and 3x2TB all reds. The first one went fine and the second now isn't detected so it looks like another DOA drive from Newegg. I am currently repairing the volume with the 3rd drive and then I get to try the 4th drive.
Well, looks like 1 of the 4 RED drives I received in the combo was DOA. Created a RAID 6 array (6GB effective, with 2 drives for redundancy per RAID 6 standard). Got a lot of bad sector errors on HD1, then the Synology would randomly became unresponsive for several minutes. Finally it reported a drive fault on HD1. Pulled it out, and has been steady as a rock since. Sending the failed drive back to NewEgg for a replacement but honestly concerned about the others now.
