Will a CyanogenMod unlock my phone?

Samwise Gamgee 2,574 229 April 6, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Let's say, I have a gsm phone that is:
  • Already rooted
  • Has a custom recovery
  • I can boot into CyanogenMod OS or the carrier's stock OS

When I'm in the CyanogenMod OS, would the phone appear unlocked, and I can use any carrier's gsm sim card?

Flashing a custom ROM won't SIM unlock your phone, bro.

If you refer to your husband/wife as 'DH/DW', you're too old to be active on a forum.

If you ask for marriage advice on a(ny) forum, you should seriously reevaluate your life.

If you don't know the difference between 'their', 'there', and 'they're', I automatically assume you have a mental disability (same goes for to/two/too and your/you're/yore).

Just flashing CM won't have any effect on your SIM card's lock.
The actual restriction in place is within the phone itself and won't accept any SIM that isn't approved without the unlock code. It's independent of the OS it's running.

Instead of making this a total hypothetical tell us what phone you have on what carrier. There is no harm in talking about this.

Also people tend to confuse terms like root, unlock, etc in regards to carriers, and bootloaders. The more you tell us the better we can help you.

Pay off your supposed contract or use a unlocking service. Rooting only unlocks Android, not the Sim or Phone.

although root access, which cyanogenmod will give you, it is a prerequisite for many sim unlocks, it depends on the specific phone - head over to XDA and do a search on your particular model to see what it involves
